My stepdad says that it is better to train upper body with dumbbells rather than using a bench press unless you are wanting to max out. What do you think about that?

I'm not sure I understand what he means, however freeweights are much more efficient than machines for building muscle as they require strict form whereas on a machine you don't really have the option. Personally I think that the bench press has become some what of a trophy exercise for people to throw on as much weight as possible and use this for measurement of strength and this is wrong, I think this is what your stepdad is referring to. However, it is still one of the best possible methods of training your chest and i wouldn't recommend avoiding it.
