I thought traditional Chinese was only used with the Taiwanese dialect (or in Hong Kong), whereas The Karate Kid is set in Beijing and therefore the Chinese there would pretty much universally be written in simplified Chinese?

Traditional is used everywhere in china including Taiwan, and Hongkong
and yes those are also technically parts of china, but after the revolution of 1949 most people here use simplified as it is the norm. Some papers in mainland china are in traditional, but for the most part written chinese in mainland china are in simplified.
Also traditional is a fucking bitch to read, because some characters are completely unrecognizable when compared to their simplified or traditional counterpart

It's really nice. I personally prefer ChangZhou but Nanjing is a good place. Air isn't that bad, the water is semi clean, (I would still boil it first as all chinese do)

Taiwanese is just a regional Mandarin dialect. Uniquely enough, the traditional system for the most part is used exclusively in just Taiwan and Hong Kong lol. Although in mainland China (Cantonese "speaking" places), they prefer writing in simplified characters, most of them have no problem reading the traditional characters, so even though simplified is more modern, standard is more recognizable still.
