I was also trying to be a dick to prove a point. There was a lot of butthurt, and a lot of "dungeon derailment" when the healer of the group was brought to near death by an arrow trap. What the DM was going for was "I want to make it where you can't use healers..." You don't think killing him off is a bit final? Dude worked hard on his character. He was only really willing to take back the "death" part after we proposed the idea of some magical ward right before the boss battle that sapped all "white magic", though he was still adamant about the "reserve the right to make 1 hit-KO traps". What you actually didn't see was the argument continued to (just what you said) "If you're just rolling to get a 20, it defeats the purpose" to which I said "I just saw my medic almost die from an arrow trap. Would you be one to just skip from room to room without making ABSOLUTELY sure?"

It ended with the agreement that traps would be a bit more sane at the cost of only getting 2 "mentally determined" roll checks. Things based on "I'm a little suspicious, I'm gonna keep investigating" and only if the first roll was high enough to where "suspicion" was a valid thing one would get from the impression.

Point is: One roll determining any redundant action you'd make doesn't leave any sort of room for improvement on the scenario, which is what the game is supposed to be about.

Otherwise: "Alright, roll your die for the number each one of your perception checks will be modified by...forever!"

Kinda defeats the purpose of rolling the die on an "as needed" basis entirely.

Wrong. The more you analyze the situation, the more information you collect from it. Are you telling me that were you to start studying a ring for its magical properties, you can say that you were going to dedicate your life to studying that ring, that if you were to fail the roll, no amount of time spend analyzing, testing, and messing with that ring is going to produce more than just "it's a ring"? Yes, you "think" the ring is just a ring, but what if you had some reason to suspect that just because you "think" something is some way, it doesn't mean it is?

Nah, but there's limits man, if you have unlimited rolls eventually you will get a 20, which defeats the purpose, depending of course which rules you play by, 3.5/pathfinder/pfs I believe 20 is not an automatic success, but 4e and 5e it is. Also if you done a perception check, you've basically scanned the room for what you can see, would'nt it make sense that you know think you've seen what you can see? Same with knowledge checks, if you can't seem to recall it or happen to know anything about it it seems rather odd that you 6 seconds after suddenly recalls it in it's entirety. Multiple skill rolls should be made (in my opinion) if you're trying to either craft, do some task where there is no consequense to failing and such. But that is just my two cents.
