Chikorita isn't a bad pokemon, but in gold/silver it has a massive type disadvantage against the first 2 gyms, when your team options are most limited. For the first gym(flying), your catch options beforehand are normal, grass, bug, flying, and rock type. The bug and grass catches have the same disadvantage, while the normal/flying types are cannon fodder at best this early. Even the 2 rock type pokemon you can get would be cut down by a mudslap. Similar story at the second gym.

In addition, it also has disadvantages against the 4th gym(because most ghosts have poison typing), 6th gym(steel), 7th gym(ice) and 8th gym(dragon. Also, since team rocket mostly uses poison types, you have a disadvantage there. It also loses to almost the entirety of the elite 4.

Your starter is usually going to be your ace pokemon for most of the game(until you get legendaries). If your ace is weak against pretty much every major checkpoint though, you're just kind of screwing yourself over. Sure, you can always replace it for something you catch later on, but if you're going to do that, what was the point in picking it to begin with?

Basically, picking chikorita is the equivalent of playing on hard mode in gen 2.

I'm Calling Bullshit on the eight gym one. Of the few trainers in the Gym, Most of them have either Seel, Swinub, Dewgong, Piloswine,Cloyster, Shelder or a Jynx. All of which are either half ground or water type except for Jynx which can be defeated by the common Crunch by another pokemon. AND if the trainer bought the TM for Solarbeam at the department store and had a Fire type knowing Sunnyday, the trainer could sweep Pryce with a Sunnyday and Solar Beam as Solar beam only needs one turn in Harsh sunlight. Making the badge easy as a Chikorita user and even harder as a Cyndaquil user in fear of Swinub and Piloswine's earth moves and Seel's, Dewgongs, Shelders'. and Cloyster's Water moves.

Okay, first, I think you meant 7th gym.

Second, You know, ice does double damage to grass, right? which means as much as a cyndaquil user fears ground and water attacks from those pokemon, chikorita fears ice attacks.

3rd, Pryce's seel and dewgong don't know any water moves in the original or remake. Also, only in the remake does his Pilloswine have a ground move, and even then its 1 ground move and 3 ice moves, making it a 1 in 4 chance of being hit by it. Its the same story for all the trainers in the gym. None of the pokemon they use in the gym learn any offensive water or ground moves by the level they are in the gym in gen 2 or 5, other than swinub learning mudslap.

4th: if you brought a fire type along, you'd be using that to fight anyway.

but isnt that the exact opposite of why people dislike bulbasaur? because it was the easy mode of first gen?
#124 - barstoolninja (03/08/2015) [-]
in addition to what the other guy said. Gen. 1 was broken as fuck. status effects that wore off after time(wrap/bind, sleep effect) left you unable to move on the recovery turn, meaning they could be re-inflicted before you could fight back. Bulbasaur had access to moves like this.
He wasn't just easy mode, he was straight up broken.

Keep in mind also that in addition to the gyms being more suited for a grass starter in Kanto, Bulbasaur is grass/poison, rather than pure grass like Chickorita, which means its no longer distinctly weak to so many pokemon that Team Rocket uses. Furthermore, Bulbasaur gets a reliable sleep inducing move in Sleep Powder, which is really big deal, whereas Chickorita does not.

And if you're playing 1st gen Kanto instead of the remakes, Venusaur has a massive statistical advantage over Charizard and Blastoise. They all have a stat spread of four stats that are around 80, and one stat that's at 100. However, Venusaur's stat at 100 was its special, which is a stat that essentially counted for two stats in 1st gen, before the special split that happened in Gold and Silver. Also in 1st gen, moves with high critical hit ratio would almost ALWAYS be a critical hit, due to a different formula. Charizard got Slash, an effectively 140 base power normal type move. Blastoise got nothing. But Venusaur got Razor Leaf, which was effectively 165 base power, including STAB.

So yeah, in 1st gen, Bulbasaur was pretty much easy mode. In 2nd and 4th gens, Chickorita is more or less hard mode.

I guess it all works out in the end if you want to be the most extreme of pokemon masters.

Fuck I didn't even think about that. Literally like a low-visibility section walled-off (in some kind of fashion, so you have to choose to see) with NSFW frequenters acting as strippers inside. Could work and could generate money. (We'd have to keep it on the DL, though. I doubt and Convention Center would be cool with that.)
