Note that it was a guy who was part of the JSDF that wrote the series. Take that as you will

the only way i take it is that he had that event happen to create tension in an otherwise assured situation. i would wager any modern military could curb stomp the fuck outta the empire from Gate. it's entertaining, but there's just too much NIPPON STRONK in it, that it kinda soils it

And there's my issue with the series. I didn't get too deep into it and it was a logn while back, but I remember the U.S. showing up and shown as straight villains. This is just about an accurate portrayal, but at the same time they seem to have under represented how god damn terrifying the U.S. military is. And for that matter, how terrifying every other world military force is compared to the JSDF.

i wholeheartedly agree, the JSDF has no right being better than American, Russian, and Chinese special forces, there's just no fucking way. there was also something about it that irked me about how 'murica goes about being a villain in this. we might be overbearing, but i feel we wouldn't straight up try and kidnap V.I.P's from another world. would be super bad for diplomatic relations

Well will you look at that, they had it that the U.S. attempted to kidnap V.I.P.s from another world and also attempt to blackmail fuckers there. Same with China and Russia, apparently, because fucking Japan of all places has the highest military moral standard. Especially when the Rape of Nan King happened and they're still denying it.

Gate is literally propaganda/muh power fantasies for the JSDF.

These fuckers are probably the military force with the least combat experience, by far, on the planet. Probably the only reason why the plot didn't end within two volumes. Been a while since I read it, so I have no idea what's going on with them in the story if they're even still part of it.

I don't remember that scene at all.
When was there a heli taken out by arrows?
Ballista, maybe, but even then.
I don't remember the JSDF taking any losses at all during the entire series.

What episode/Manga chapter was this?

I remember seeing it animated a little while back. One of the earlier ones. Can't for the life of me remember.

There was a guy in the thread who made a several paragraph long reply to explain why that would never fucking happen

i share the feeling though, it's so fucking unreasonable that it wouldn't make any sense even in the realm of fantasy
