Way more rules than English.
Way fewer exceptions. Way, way fewer.

In my opinion, the speaking part is not that hard to get, if you can get used to the wildly different grammatical structure and the concept of particles. And naturally there's a lot of weird rules and exceptions you gotta know (honestly I'm not that far into the language myself, I tried self-teaching for a long time but I'm not good at that)
The hard part is the reading, I think.

Fuck, man I don't even know. Something to do with when they met the Chinese and they had to communicate, it's all a big clusterfuck. This is hopefully the kind of shit I'm gonna find out when uni starts.

Aight then. Wall of text incoming.

The two 'alphabets', hiragana and katakana function basically the same, and they're all more like syllables than letters. Like you have かきくけandこ that make the sounds ka, ki, ku, ke, and ko. The same sounds in katakana are カキクケandコ.
Which one you use depends on certain things, usually katakana is used for english words, or loan words. Hiragana is for particles and other shit.

Where it gets REALLY fucking stupid and complicated is when you start talking about kanji. They're based on chinese pictograms and there are LITERALLY thousands of them to memorise.
