Except that isn't what would happen. A 50 cal would remove a limb/head or blow a giant hole in someone's torso. It would not vaporize them.

Depends on how it hits. If the bullet starts to tumble it can cause an explosion of that sort. Or if it hits a bone on impact or for some reason starts to come apart.
one example I've seen was a high caliber sniper rifle round clipping a fence and then starting to tumble before hitting the target

It still wouldn't vaporize the target. What you are talking about would just blow a larger chunk out of them, depending on where it hit. Same goes for hitting bone. There is a pretty good chance, if the target is hit, that you are going to hit bone but it will most likely just cause a larger hole. These things will not just vaporize someone into a fine pink mist. The bullet breaking apart on impact or shattering bone is not an explosion. They just create multiple pieces to rip through someone, all traveling in roughly the same direction, rather than a single piece. An actual explosion, which could possible turn someone into a fine pink mist if powerful enough, would literally rip someone apart, causing pieces of them to be blown off in all directions.

I do believe that they use .50 cal snipers against infantry. Probably not on a large scale but I do believe that the worlds longest kill was made with a macmillian. The army America atleast probably dont give a shit about spending a little extra on bigger guns. They spend billions trillions? every year. They blast m2s like nothing else. There is also the fact that there is no point in having 2 people in a squad with a sniper rifle one with a 308/408 and one with a .50 bmg. Where one of them can only do half the job, such as taking out engine blocks.

I'm not saying it never happens but it is not common at all. Beyond the increased cost per shot, they are also larger rifles, which makes them more difficult to carry around. Also, most squads don't carry around 50 cal rifles, however, in a situation where a member of a squad is carrying one then they probably wouldn't have someone carrying around a .308 rifle. At that point it would be a hindrance and the increased cost would be justified.

Upon doing some research alot of the worlds longest kills were made with .50 cal rifles. I also meant to write .338 not .308
