Oh, yeah, he meant the anniversary of 9/11. I keep forgetting that was a few days ago.

I'm such an un-stereotypical American in that i actually forgot about 11/9 (and that I write dates that way)!

Ok, the "4 days since 9/11" quote implies that half of these Tweeters are trolls who are trying to be funny. Unless you yourself just made that quote up.

Yeah, but that's the thing with autonomous vassals from right about then until the end of feudalism; their freedom and freedom to express their power means a freedom to do what they want. Some may have been loyal to the law, certainly, but men in power rarely are if they can get away with it.

I'm not saying I'm well-read on Persian history by any means, I'm just chipping in with what I know about leadership and ancient kingdoms.

Doubt that's entirely true. The Persian Empire was one of the largest empires that have ever existed, in a time long before infrastructure and communications were properly established parts of society. The vassals of Xerxes were likely very diverse in their ways and manners, depending on where they were, and it's a bit unrealistic to say that none of them had slaves in abundance or that they all treated their people well.

Cyrus the Great, when founding his empire, banned slavery and declared religious freedom. The Archaemenid empire also left the areas they conquered fairly autonomous as long as they paid taxes and paid taxes to the "King of Kings". Now while slavery was banned, there was most likely a system more closely resembling serfdom.

This image of the "uncivilised Africans" probably came about as a way of justifying the land grab by the European empires, by portraying them as backwards, even exaggerating it to the point of calling them foragers. Let's not forget that history is written by the victors, and that for centuries Carthage was seen as a foreign, eastern culture in the Mediterranean, when it had been there long before the Romans (even influencing much of their culture) who portrayed them as evil and strange to get public opinion to support the punic wars. Or the fact that the Gallic tribes are often portrayed as backwards and wild, when in fact they were already trading with the Greeks, with a more advanced economic system than the Romans (small coinage, allowing for trade at low levels, not just bartering or gold like the Romans did). Conquerors almost always portray the conquered as their cultural inferiors in order to justify themselves to their people and the rest of the world.

Yeah, a friend of mine volunteered with a suicide helpline. he'd tell me about the people who'd call after they'd killed themselves (after an OD or cutting their wrists etc), he'd have to notify the police and act as a witness.
One particular call got him really upset, it was a 14 year old girl. I won't go into any details, but the same day that he had this call he actually killed himself.

Irony I guess.
