Best way to avoid running into animals is to make a lot of noise while you hike, they'll hear you beforehand and move away.

Well, it depends on the type of bear. Assuming you live in a northern area, Grizzlies are a legitimate concern. Mountain Lions are pretty frequent too. Bear spray will pretty much work without failure, but in the unlikely case that it might fail, your best chance is to be submissive. A grizzly bear is incredibly large (Just knowing the average size or seeing a picture is not enough - it's truly bewildering to see how large they are in real life), and picking a fight with it will result in you being decapitated in one blow, and they are also very fast; running will result in you being chased down.

Bear spray could likely be seen as a threat to the bear, since it won't know what it is, so if you ever do encounter one, then you should not use it unless it comes in to investigate.

With a black bear, bear spray is not a bad idea. They are very small compared to others, but they still have a very likely chance of harming you, so it's good to keep the knife handy. Due to their smaller size and more passive/nomadic nature, putting up a fight will eventually convince them you're not worth it. However, Grizzly bears are very territorial, not very nice, and can take a blow better than you, so fighting one will more or less result in you dying.

A mountain lion stalks and hunts just like any other big cat; they need the element of surprise, so if you spot it first, maintain eye contact. If they know you are watching them, then they know you could easily get away. However, in the event of one actually attacking you, if you have mace, use it. Unfortunately with them, you won't get the Hollywood myth of the cat growling at you first. If you know anything about cats, you know that them roaring at you before attacking is fucking stupid.

All in all, though, these animals are all fairly rare (unless you're in select places), and when they do occur, they'll likely stay away from you unless they're absolutely starving. Bears aren't dicks and lions don't like the taste of people.

For the bigger bears, what about the factor of agility?
I know they go faster but can they change direction as quickly, like since they have so much inertia with them unlike me I can quickly cut 90 degrees without losing too much speed.
And humans have some of thee most stamina so it would definitely run out of steam before me? is this a stupid idea or ?

I've been told by my crazy wilderness grandfather to run partway down a hill, then go back up, because a bear weighs so much it can't stop itself to chase you

Bears in general are very agile creatures, surprisingly. They are large, but still have a lot of control over their movements. Keep in mind, the forest is their element, not ours, so they can traverse it better than most humans could. Humans have a lot of stamina, and could probably run their top speed longer than a bear could run its top speed, but keep in mind, bears are very fast. A grizzly bear can outrun a horse, and will run through brush very easily, where as humans usually top out around 10 mph, and brush will trip them or tangle them up fairly easily.

I've heard that black bears can be scared by making yourself appear larger and making loud noises, since they are very passive, but doing something like this with a Grizzly or brown bear would likely result in it making itself appear much, much larger, and being much, much louder before it attacks.

So long story short, running is not a good idea. If the situation is fairly calm, you can very slowly distance yourself, but running will for the most part only make the bear chase you, in a footrace that you're not very likely to win.

>Bears aren't dicks.
This is true, while i was hiking along a smokey mountains path i spotted a black bear in the distance. He (or she couldn't tell) was just brushing His(Or her, don't kill me bear-kin) back against the tree. Needless to say the mountains were beautiful would go again.

Nothing major I just thought that was interesting.

Yeah, I've been to the Smoky mountains once or twice and I've seen at least one bear every time I actually went up into the mountains. Black bears are cuter than anything else in the world, they're really not much bigger than a large dog.
