You can always find a few people that will be offended by anything you do , so what you are arguing for is everyone doing nothing and staying indoors to avoid offending anyone. haven't you heard the parable of the man and the donkey ?

Except that he's been publicly shamed for wearing that shirt. Verbal abuse is still abuse. He's received nothing but abuse from the very same people who supposedly abhor shaming people for what they were wearing. While it may not have been "professional" to wear that shirt for the interview, it was important to him. It was specially made for him by a female friend who he probably told that he would wear it to the interview, to show how much he liked it.
This man and his team just accomplished one of the greatest scientific achievements in the history of mankind, and his entire life has been shit on just because some people who are supposed to be against shaming people for what they wear constantly harass him for his choice of artier.
User avatar #131 - fuckilostthegame (11/23/2014) [-]
The difference between his situation and the plight of women as a gender is that:
1. He is an individual, and the shirt he wore would've broken any sort of clothing guideline. You wouldn't be allowed to wear that shit to school, so why is it appropriate for him to wear it to work
2. The shaming of women argument stems from the claim that women who dress showing more skin are "slutty" (which is somehow seen as abhorable and disgusting) or "asking for it". And the reason they are shamed for their clothing is either because the ones who dress slutty don't want to have sex with the people who insult them, or the ones who don't dress slutty are considered "prude" and are shamed for not having enough sex.

Except people said hurtful things and probably got him in trouble with his boss.
They ruined the greatest day of his life.

But nah, we should totes "get over it" and let the fucktards think they should do this again.

I understand. Please take a moment to understand me.

To say it is harassment even if you are just trying to draw attention is still implying those actions are criminal, because harassment is criminal. You know? Also calling it Harassment wont work as well because most people will see it for what it is. An issue while perhaps legitimate in the sense it is understandably annoying,is being blown out of proportion.

To feel such fear about men is driven by sexism itself. No one seems to understand that.I mean people have those fears about men on the street but not women. That is sexist. Had a couple female customers come in and tell me they saw a story on the news about a woman who killed her adoptive mother and her boyfriend and hid their bodies in her luggage.
Being aware is good but not paranoid. I was taught in the Navy simply keeping your head up and even acknowledging people will lower your chances of being attacked on the street. They want easy targets and someone they can catch off guard. There was also a social experiment video where they had a mean seemingly abusive to a women and everyone rushing in to help the woman, yet when the woman abused the man people just laughed.
Which means women have even less reason to worry. American society has been trained from a young age to defend women. Which means with that and the chances of the person being a criminal being very low, women are very safe here.
Only time they do get attack is if they are alone, or the criminal has a gun or there is more than one of them.

Women are VERY safe in America and will be safer if they travel in groups sat after dark etc.
User avatar #130 - fuckilostthegame (11/16/2014) [-]
I mean the reason women are afraid of men is because we're more genetically inclined to be stronger and bigger than women. So in a way, biological gender is "sexist". And yeah, everyone has the potential for violent and malicious crime, but the statistic just keep pointing to the fact that women are not safe in this country, or for that matter, many other countries.

And also holy shit, saying that women should have to travel in groups to be more safe on the street is exactly what this is all about. There shouldn't be a goddamn necessity for protective measures, everyone should be secure in their own person and on top of that, be confident in that security.

The thing is most of it isn't even harassment. Jackassory perhaps, annoying definately. Harassment no. The guy who followed her, THAT was harassment. Looks, cat calls, etc are not harassment. They want it to be treated as a crime. Can you imagine a country where you are arrested or fined just for looking at a person and them not liking it. People should not be policed for simply hurting someones feelings or offending someone.

No I am not upset at the woman. What we need to do though is separate crimes from hurt feelings. That is why I said it is getting out of hand. Yelling how nice someones ass is, may be unwelcome and not "kosher" but it is also not harassment. I think people involved in this need to looking into what constitutes harassment.

I do also respect how your are approaching me about this. You are not being an ass and that is cool.
User avatar #127 - fuckilostthegame (11/08/2014) [-]
They don't want people to be arrested for this, they just want it to stop
And I guess the strict definition of harassment may not fit all instances of catcalling or such happenings, but would anyone listen if they just said it was annoying? The reason this is a big deal is that a lot of women legit feel intimidated and terrified with good reason. They have no idea if the dude on the street is gonna follow her to her house, mug her, rape her, or murder her. And even though the chance of that happening isn't extremely high, it's a fucking chance I wouldn't wanna take, yknow what I'm saying?

I'm just tryna tell people how it is I guess
