Alcoholism is an addiction. Claiming it's a disease is an insult towards people who suffers an actual illness.

I bet you are one of those people who also argues that depression, anxiety, ADHD, and manic depression are also not genetic or a disease.

Cancer is a disease. Alcoholism is not.

One day you might see the difference, but I won't hold my breath.

You are literally too stupid for your own good. Both alcoholism and addiction are inherited. If something is inherited, there is a trigger for it somewhere in the human genome. Therefore, addiction is genetic. If you can find me 3 sources from a scholarly journal, I may consider your counter argument.
User avatar #814059 - whoozy (07/03/2015) [-]
I never said addiction isn't a thing, I said it isn't a disease and its basically your own doing.

It's like drug users blaming society for their own abuse. Just stupid.

"Alcohol addiction is a complex
disease that results from a variety
of genetic, social, and environmental influences. Alcoholism approximately
4.65 percent of the U.S. population in 2001–2002, producing
severe economic, social, and medical
ramifications (Grant 2004). Researchers
estimate that between 50 and 60 percent
of alcoholism risk is determined
by genetics
(Goldman and Bergen 1998;
McGue 1999). "

Okay

Alcoholism is a complex disease. As with other common diseases, genetic variants underlying alcoholism have been illusive, possibly due to the small effect from each individual susceptible variant, gene × environment and gene × gene interactions and complications in phenotype definition. (Chen et al. 1)
User avatar #814072 - whoozy (07/03/2015) [-]
The best you could argue is that addictive genes itself is a disorder.

People can get addicted to anything (gambling, drugs, adrenaline junkies etc.)

So yes, some people are especially suseptible to addiction based on their genes.

That does not make the addiction itself a disease. It's self harm and in the end you would be "cured" if you just managed to stop harming yourself.

Please, give me some sources since you have such a strong opinion.

What do you want a source on exactly? As you're presenting your case there's no such thing as willpower or self control. Like drinking alcohol is programmed into their genes.

Depends really. These are healthy individuals driven sick by their own actions. It's not like a person born with schizophrenia.

The cure for them is simply to stop, even though it's extremely difficult. I'm not an unreasonable person, but don't pretend that addicts are completely innocent of their situation.
User avatar #814097 - fjaddictftw (07/03/2015) [-]
Addiction and alcoholism are diseases. They are long term ( chronic). They require immediate treatment, follow up treatment, therapy, and medication in some extreme cases. It is not as simple as not picking up a drug or drink. For someone who has never experienced it either first hand or through a family member, I can see how one could come to the conclusion of it not being a disease. However, most doctors, psychologists, and therapists recognize addiction as a disease. There are genetic triggers. That does not mean that everyone who has the gene is going to become an alcoholic. It falls back to "nature vs nurture". There are both environmental factors, including personal choices within those environments, and there are also uncontrollable factors that are imbedded within genetics. For you to say that it is as simple as having the "will" to stop is complete ignorance.

It's a serious problem yes, and I know I can't "put myself in their situation", but in the end it's literally self harm.

Prolonged self harm can lead to actual diseases.
Disease is simply the wrong term to use. Call it what it is: AN ADDICTION.

I'm not saying it's as simple as having the will to stop, I'm saying this is something you can seek help for instead of giving into while blaming your genes.

Addiction has an element of personal responsibility which people tend to forget.
