Cheers for the compliment! Oh my god do I try

nandaaz gave a pretty good synopsis. It's got great definitions, but sometimes just like Norton it tries to nanny you a bit too much, which will piss off any mildly advanced user. I used it for a few years before I rebuilt my PC a month or so ago and I never had it freezing games, but I did find it annoying till I went through and changed a bunch of settings to make it less invasive, EG automatically quarantining files that it think might be viruses, like cracks or pieces of code i'm working on, but that wasn't too hard to fix. Also shouting at me each time it updated pissed me off, that was the first thing to be changed.

Overall, a capable virus scanner, but I prefer microsoft security essentials because it knows it's place and stays there quietly till something goes wrong

I've been using Avast for a pretty long time now, and let me tell you this: it works, you won't get a virus every hour, but it's annoying as fuck. Anytime you run a program, download a .exe, or another program tries to do SOMETHING on your computer, it lets you know, and it asks for your permission.
Now this is fine if you really need the protection or want to know exactly what's going on with every program you run, but it also freezes tons of games (You start a game, the screen goes black, then it loads, but it keeps loading because avast is blocking it and waiting for your permission, which you can't give because your screen is black).
You SHOULD be able to turn all this off though, but I still haven't found out how...
Got a new computer a week ago so luckily I didn't have to deal with trying to get rid of the program, right now I'm using Microsoft security essentials and it works just fine.

Turn on gaming mode. It will shut the fuck up and not bother you.

But I never even found the fkin settings, that's why I hate it so much! Even if I knw what to change I couldn't have done it because it's impossible to find the settings!

Then I'm afraid that there's no hope for you. Just have a quick look in the options menu, which is on the bar on the left side of the menu. It's really not hard to find.
#333 - alexanderh (06/02/2014) [-]
Also, it is in the first tab in the options menu. If you can't find that, I'm afraid you might be partially blind.

I know this is going to sound either really weird or retarded, but:

On a different pc with avast I was able to find the options menu, but when looking on my laptop there are seriously NO butttons. All i can do is see which addons i should update and see what avast thinks about my security, nothing else...

Just block the pop-up, tick the box where it says ''Silent when a full-screen application is running'' and it won't ask or do anything

Forgot to add something:

Many people like avast, and it certainly works, but it's just a pain in the ass sometimes. Keep that in mind while choosing.

How about Eset nod32?

I've heard from some of my very technologically adept friends that it was the best antivirus they've ever had,

Never had it, but we use it at work and it sometimes lets malware through(or we have shitheads that go to the wrong sites, we aren't sure). Besides that it works fine, but you also get popups sometimes saying the database was updated or something, but it's really small and quiet so you barely notice it, unlike avast or mcafee

There's a point where this needed to stop.
And we've clearly passed it.
