The metal essentially acts like a cushion and is designed that way to crumple so it can absorb the force. With out it the saw would get damaged and the motor as well most likely.

Essentially the metal elongates the time from moving to not moving, allowing the blade to decelerate with out completely destroying its self.

Cars today have crumple zones in the engines framework so your engine does not fly through your dash if you get in a head on collision.

I couldnt find any good sources to show pictures. But I can probably answer anything if you dont completely understand.

No, mythbusters did this.
It breaks a metal piece that essentially stops the blade. But all that kinetic energy destroys the piece. Of course thats what its there for. It acts as a crumple zone.

I assumed something would get broken, and never really doubted it, but why make it some super-expensive piece? That's my issue with it. I mean, yes, something needs to interfere to stop the blade--that much is certain, but wouldn't a metal bar from any Home Depot be just as effective, and less expensive?

I mean, I'm not any sort of engineer, or anything, so I'm more or less guessing out of my asshole, but it makes sense to me that they'd be more than capable of tossing some more or less worthless piece in there to stop the blade, keeping the owner from having to pay way more than its' worth?

Also, I call bullshit from the school's claim that it breaks some super expensive piece in the saw--something tells me that if anything gets broken it's not going to be the expensive bits--usually those are protected a bit better. I personally think the school just wanted to be a bunch of jews and get as much cash as they could out of its' students before they graduate.
