Still. Macdonalds workers in norway get 21.94 $/hr (at least when I worked there). Can be lived off in norway. You wont have a GREAT life. But if the parents have this job, they can indeed support a family on this wage. No problem. Keep in mind norway is a bit more expencive than usa..

I don't know, man.. I worked fast food just after highschool. Putting up with some people and the disgusting things we had to do, plus the fact that we were worked like 10 hours straight and only got a quarter off food when we worked.. It was hard to come ahead, a lot of stress, and really not worth the pay to put up with people.
Just because it's easy to train for, doesn't mean it's easy.

This is a retarded argument on several levels. First, the government can't "fix" unemployment short of direct economic intervention, as it is a direct result of the actions of companies. Second, companies have already cut the staff to the barebones. Walmart is a great example: they give almost no worker full time, pay them the lowest they can, and even go so far as to help them apply for government assistance so that they government subsidizes their greed with corporate welfare. Almost every other major corporation that pays shit is doing the same thing because they are allowed to get away with it. It's not even smart fiscal policy, but they do it anyways.
Also, where do you get off deciding what is too much for a job? How did you make that determination?

In response to your last question: A dropout burger flipper in a job where he can easily be replaced by literally anybody else should not earn equal pay with a nurse who went to school and into debt to get her degree. I'm a plant biochemist in the agriculture industry. I've also worked fast food. This job is infinitely more difficult and stressful than burger flipping and dealing with retarded fat-asses. If the minimum wage went up to $15 per hour, I'd be on par with a burger flipper. Why the fuck would I stay with my current job if I could get paid the same amount to shut off my brain and do simple labor for the same pay? Why the fuck would anybody stay at a job that requires the person to actually be educated and worth something to society if they can just go flip burgers for the same pay?

That's the kind of thing that would work. Scale it up. Yeah, in 10 years it'll need to be $15 to keep up with everything. But jumping there over night would be a catastrophically bad idea. Certainly this "well, we'll raise it 18 cents this year, then 22 cents next year" thing isn't working when the dollar is devaluing at twice that rate.

Or, we could increase minimum wage for companies that can obviously afford it.
Mcdonalds comes to mind as a company that wouldn't cut employees for 15$ an hour.
Small businesses benefit from it too, they can pay their employees less and as a result don't have to deal with as much of the brunt.
However i think this would also make people not want to work for small businesses, but whatever, i don't have any math, or anything to back me up, i'm just speculating.

My family runs a small business and what youre saying would hurt everyone. minimum wage should be raised to match inflation, but only to about $9.50 or so. anything more and businesses like my family's would start cutting staff, if not just outright close our doors. many smaller companies simply cant afford it. the excuse that people cant get other jobs is bull shit. there are a lot more jobs than people think, they just dont pay well at first and that scares people off.

"the excuse that people cant get other jobs is bull shit. there are a lot more jobs than people think" Man idk where you are but as far tx goes a lot of my graduated colleagues can't get any jobs that arent shitty fast food restaurants. I am lucky and grateful to have a family that is connected and because of this it was easier for me to get employed, however not everyone is this fortunate. Unemployment is higher than the government is willing to admit.
#427 - Ashtaroth (10/28/2014) [-]
Well yeah. The government altered the way unemployment is reported. They say 6-ish% when it's more like double that. They only count people collecting unemployment benefits. So if that expires and you end up living on general welfare, you're not unemployed anymore. Living on the dole and doing nothing is actually a job now, according to D.C.

Could pay people under the table.

You are incredibly wrong. McDonalds absolutely would cut employees if you forced them to raise the minimum wage to $15 dollars. You are effectively doubling the number of employees they have as 2 X 7.50 = 15 and for a workforce as large as McDonalds this is a huge impact.
#215 - goodhomer (10/28/2014) [-]
McDonalds profits dropped 30% - That is a HUGE drop.
Not only that but they are at the forefront of replacing humans with machines even without having to pay more.
No, the real solution is to make minimum wage just that, a wage that everyone gets as a minimum, as in paid by the Government. And the wage is reduced based on how much you earn.
