But if you don't put any ranks in it you're not gonna beat that DC 40 History test. What he really needed was to make a decent initiative roll for studying.
Why would a high schooler be taking a DC 40 History test? I mean thats what... a first level charackter at best? If we are talking D&D that means a max of 4 ranks at that level. Assuming an impossibly high 18 base int thats a +8 modifier to his roll. Even the way I do skill checks that aren't super pressured (I count a NAT 20 as a 30) thats an absolute maximum of a 38.... There is no way he could have passed a DC 40 test. Not reasonably anyway.
Although, arguably a Test is a high pressure situation so it would still only be more like a 28 possible roll
School is hard. Studying gives Insight, Competence, Circumstance and Morale
(unless you have the flaw Test Anxiety)
bonuses. The encounter is pretty much designed to ruin a character that doesn't take the time to study.
You could decide to cheat, but that requires some combination of Hide, Spot, Gather Information, Forgery, Slight of Hand, Bluff and occasionally Decipher Script.
Or, if all else fails, seduction occasionally works. But failing that has some serious consequences.
I could see studying giving one type of bonus, but typically speaking 1 single action doesn't give more than one type of bonus unless its a very minor bonus. As well, if it did give all types of bonus having a cloak would negate one because it gives more of a bonus. Assuming it gives a minor bonus to all of them it would only be like a +1, or it more likely would give a +3 to one type... Either way you assume a +3 bonus for studying still only gives you a 31 on a nat 20 if its a high pressure situation the way I count it, or if its a normal skill check the way most DM/GMs count it.... even if you assume a +2 to each thats a 34, and studying in Pathfinder only gives a +2 to one type of bouns (I forget which) unless you have an extensive library on that specific subject in which case you can take a full work shit (8 hours) to study to gain a +5, which counting studying as +2 to all 3 types is more than....
My assumption would be that a DC 40 test would be something that covers months worth of material, thus offering you many opportunities to study for hours, getting a few accumulating bonuses as high as +5 each.
Your Competence, Circumstance, Insight and Morale bonuses would improve as you continue studying. And as in real life, after a few months of not using that knowledge and not studying to maintain the bonuses, they disappear. Like spell uses you didn't cast the previous day.
I suppose we could specify that beating the DC 40 is for a perfect 100% A+, and that failure by a few points brings your letter grade down incrementally, so the students who don't get the full +8 for maxed ranks and Int modifier aren't screwed. Every 2 below sounds reasonable right?
A+40, A 39 38, A- 37 36, B+ 35 34, B 33 32, B- 31 30, C+ 29 28, C 27 26, C- 25 24, D+ 23 22, D 21 20, D- 19 18, F 17 and below
Perhaps I didn't put enough ranks in Knowledge (Bonuses) or I failed my roll at adapting a system, which in hindsight I should have known probably already exists.
Hmm... Yes... I think maybe that would be right. Maybe you would be able to accumulate a +5 per week of studying that actually sticks, so 2 weeks with a nat 20 would be a perfect 100, 2 addition weeks at that rate would give even a 10 a high chance of success.... And thats assuming standard studying not like super intensive studying of course... Yes... I think you would be right.
