It hasn't -COST- a lot, it's just -MADE- a lot, due to pledges.

The game was always going to be released in modules, they said so on the kickstarter.
It was always to be massive, it was always to take time.
4 years development is not a very long time for an AAA title, at all. Only AAA games I know that have 3 are sequels made in a same engine. And I never heard of one under 3 that was anything close to good, or it was badly unfinished when published.
Considering the scope of Star Citizen, and the fact that they ARE giving us new modules fairly often, I'd say its doing pretty damn good.
Complaining that game is "only in alpha" after 4 years, when its such a massive AAA game, AND the studio was literally being built as they were making the game (they started with six people and no offices), just shows complete lack of understanding of software development.
