It's acceptable because kids are assholes and everyone loves badass grandpas

I don't like kids either but come on that is not being badass, that's being a bit of an asshole to a kid that had pure curiosity

If it makes you feel any better, it's most likely fake, or exaggerated.

I studied Spanish and French in high school, Arabic in college, and Norwegian on Duolingo.
Like I said, I know nothing replaces actual instruction, it's just my opinion Duolingo is the best alternative I've ever tried.

Well, I won't argue with you that it isn't as good as monthly intensive lesons and living in Italy, lol, but I do think it's the best alternative available when those options aren't there for you. I seem to have more success with the grammar than you did, but if there's one thing I absorb quickly, it's grammar

Well grammar isn't explained anywhere in duolingo, so you have to kind of figure it out. That's good if you want to keep a basic level, but it isn't if you want to progress in the language and interiorize it. You can always tell who hasn't learnt the basic grammar, because no matter how fluent they are there's always going to be many flaws in their language.
May I ask what language are you studying?

Curious, have you actually used Duolingo?
#42 - enialis (03/05/2016) [-]
Yes, when I was starting to learn Italian. I was actually really into it, but after weeks and tens of levels I realized I could barely say: This is a glass. It did help me as a first contact but I didn't know any grammatical structures, or how to build my own sentences. After a classic monthly intensive course, attending to class and following a book and a teacher during my three months in Italy, I had an upper-intermediate level. This is a special case, because my mother tongue is also from a romanic origin, so the structures made more sense to me; but still, I wouldn't have made it with duolingo
