Here is a real world example using my 304 page book Not Much of a Crime printed by CS

Print cost: $5.12
Retail price: $16.95
Royalty if I sell the book out of the back of my car: $11.33 (50¢ shipping per unit when ordered in qtys 10+)
CS eStore: 20% commission ($3.39) + print cost ($5.12) my royalty is $8.44 (no shipping due to CS fulfillment)
Amazon: 40% commission ($6.78) + $5.12 leaves me with $5.05 (Amazon fulfillment)
EDC: 60% commission ($10.17) + $5.12 earns me with $1.66 per unit sold.

Now, before you discount EDC as a viable option, most of my sales are coming through EDC and $1.66 is a lot more than you will earn through a traditional or vanity press. A friend of mine only earned 7¢ per unit sold for the 500,000 copies sold through a traditional press. He is now self-publishing.

and

Printing POD (including short runs) and offset are 2 different animals.

POD printing costs can actually be higher per page compared to Offset printing costs.

For example, CreateSpace POD cost per page is 0.012 for b/w. Add 0.85 per unit. Let's say you have a 300 page book, your costs would be: (0.012x300)+0.85, total cost per unit/book is: $4.45.

Let's compare Lightning Source POD costs per page, it's 0.015 for b/w. Add 0.90 per unit. Same book, costs would be: (0.015x300)+0.90, total cost per book is: $5.40.

For short run/offset printing, by increasing the number of books you want printed it'll bring down the costs per unit/book, thus your per page costs are less.

So in the case of LightningSource, they offer discounts for their short run & or offset printing for larger volume of units/books ordered.

Discounts in increments of 5%, 10%, 20% and 25% for 50-99, 100-249, 250-499 and 500+ units. There is an additional discount for larger offset runs of 750 (hardback) and 1500 (paperback).

So let's say you order 500 paperback books through LightningSource, you'll get a 25% on the total run:
For the same book, 500x$5.40 = $2700.
Discount at 25% for 500 units: $2700x.25=$675; Total cost = $2025.
Cost per unit/book will be: $2025/500 = $4.05;
Total cost per page: $4.05-.90=$3.15; $3.15/300 = 0.0105.

The larger the run, the less per unit/book and per page cost.

Per page cost for an On-Demand book via LightningSource: 0.015.
Per unit/Book: $5.40.
Per page cost for a Short Run/Offset book (printing 500+ units) via LightningSource: 0.0105.
Per unit/Book: $4.05.

Negative ghost rider. That's the reason peeps always complain on America's taxes.

Police : State Taxes (so yes, technically taxes) - although one could argue many make much of their income off of tickets and fines.
Garbage Disposal: Many are ran by private corporations, thus it's a monthly fee
Fire Fighters: Used to be taxes, now your ass will get a bill in the mail from a 3rd party company to charge you for their services. I've worked many car accident scenes and they bill for every firefighter, truck, ladder, chemicals used, etc.

..and just to add a few that wasn't in your list that, I believe, should be "free" provided by your taxes are:

Ambulance rides
Public Transportation
Toll Roads...they shouldn't exist

Public Transport

Here's the main reason. The U.S. tax system is so convoluted, complicated, and broad that many don't realize how much is being taken from them. The Federal Govt. determines how much you're taxed by, by using just your Federal tax rate; which most middle-class are taxed at 9-20%. However, this does not include MANY other taxes. We'll use a salary (not mine - but my city's average, using the same tax %)

Hourly: $23.97

Gross Salary: $46,700
Fed Tax: $8,940 (20%)
Oasdi/EE: $1,868 (4% - and not considered a tax)
MED/EE: $700.50 (1.5% - not considered a tax)
State Tax: $2,148 (4.6%)
------------------------------------------------
Net: $33,044

Here's where it gets interesting. You are then taxed again on...stuff. Some of the below amounts will vary by state.

Property Taxes: $1,998
ALL purchases in my state are taxed at 7%, thus that's $2,313 off the Net
911 Fees: $1.50/mo *though any phone provider
Car Tag Tax: $180/yr

*City, County, and Federal Fees located on ANY phone/internet bill...

City Franchise fee: $0.38
Federal Universal Fee: $1.39
State Universal Access Fund: $0.37
State Hearing Impaired Surcharge: $0.11
Federal Tax: $0.78
County Tax: $0.40
-----------------------------------------------------
Total left after all taxes: $28,433

Thus, the effective tax rate is: 40% on $46,700. And just to note, Canada's tax rate for Federal + Province is in this tax rate area and they get "free" healthcare. Yet, the U.S. has one of the highest cost of health care in the world, while being no where near high on the quality list.

And to be fair, I didn't add many other things that will bill or charge you and are supposed to, and used to be, provided for by taxes like parking, public transportation, ambulance fees, fire department fees, garbage disposal/sanitation, water bills, etc.

To prove a point further, this figure also doesn't include absolute needs that have drastically increased in price due to inflation like, heath care, mortgage/rent, home/renters insurance, electricity, phone/internet bills, water bill, car payment and/or insurance, life insurance, and 401K/savings/retirement.

If you add that last statement into the equation (which I have on my own finances and on this example, but to save you from reading more of what's already a novel), you would have approximately 5-20% of your net income left; or $1,400-$5,600.

Thus, to conclude, we are robbed of most of what we make. Which, I wouldn't mind a high tax rate IF it paid for what I said above...yet it doesn't, it passes the expense off again on the backs of citizens, who have already paid their taxes. Add inflation into the mix on paying for absolute necessaries and you're left with very little to pay for other things you may need.

TLDR: Don't worry, no one else is taking the time to do the math either, hence why we have such a shit storm of a problem in the U.S.

#130 - mrgreentabasco (04/17/2015) [-]
You think thats complicatet ? Welcome to germany fucker, where we have the official most complex taxlaw of the world
User avatar #127 - inyourmind (04/17/2015) [-]
you overestimated the taxes man.

Lets take your example income of $46,700
first subtract the med and oasdi (there are exempted from state or federal taxes because they are not considered part of your gross income) 46700 - 1868 - 700.50 = $44,131.5
Now lets say you are single and take the personal basic personal exemption which subtracts a further 6,200 this year. you can also take a personal exemption of a further $3950.0 (this is per person dependent on that income including yourself) $44,131.5 - 6,200 - 3950.= $33,981.5 (this is your taxable income)
now the tax rate on that is 10% for the first 9075 = $907.5 tax
the remainder is taxed at a rate of 15% (33,981.5 - 9075)*.15 = $3735.975 tax
added together the total federal tax is $4,643.475 remove the change as it's not included (nor rounded) giving $4,643 in federal tax.

This means you paid a federal income tax of just under 10% of your income

now lets take the state assuming your provided rate of 4.6%. 33,981.5 *.046 = 1563.149

this means that after these taxes you have an income of 46,700 - 1,563 - 4,643 - 1,868 - 700.5 = 37,925.5 dollars net

next we take the the 7% off of net (not exact some things are in fact exempt from taxes such as food) =2657.78
then take away that along with your other costs and you get (side note the quarter million dollar house that property tax comes from was a poor decision on the part of someone earning this kind of income should have aimed at 175,000- 200,000 area)

37,925.5 - 2657.78- 1,998 - 180 - (1.5- .38 -1.39 -.37 -.44 -.78 -.4)*12 = $33029.6 remaining.
This gives a total tax rate of 29.3% not 40% of course as I believe the state, property, and sales taxes were a bit high so I could see the real tax rate falling to 27%.

Because our nation was founded on not paying taxes!

One of the reasons is that it's somewhat complicated, and a plain pain in the ass to do. Another would be that not a lot of people trust the government with money anymore.
User avatar #106 - AnomynousUser (04/17/2015) [-]
Our nation wasn't founded on not paying taxes - it was founded on taxation without representation. We knew we had to pay higher taxes on something, and were willing to, because of the war. However, we wanted to have people at the British island (idk if they referred to themselves as Great Britain, England, United Kingdom, or whatever) representing us.

Of course, this was a hypocritical complaint, as we'd turn around and do the same thing to our own people by having the few white male voters representing the rest of the states in elections, but still.

The reason why we got so pissed about the tea tax was because they ignored us for so many acts that we refused and continued to tax without our representation, and then they turned to their own monopolized company, and placed a tax to benefit it.
#67 - Absolute Madman (04/16/2015) [-]
No it wasn't, The Boston Tea Party was a protest against state sponsored monopoly (British East India Company)
