There are many risk factors for type 2 diabetes such as age, race, pregnancy, stress, certain medications, genetics or family history, high cholesterol and obesity. However, the single best predictor of type 2 diabetes is overweight or obesity. Almost 90% of people living with type 2 diabetes are overweight or have obesity. People who are overweight or have obesity have added pressure on their body's ability to use insulin to properly control blood sugar levels, and are therefore more likely to develop diabetes. The number of diabetes cases among American adults increased by a third during the 1990s, and additional increases are expected. This rapid increase in the occurrence of diabetes is mostly attributed to the growing prevalence of obesity in the United States.

Actually, Type two is more related to age and genetics just like Type one. Weight CAN be a factor but so is ethnicity, age, and family history. There are many obese people who never develop it and there are people who are a perfect weight and get it.
I am not saying you are wrong, I am just adding some facts.
User avatar #87 - therealfell (04/03/2015) [-]
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure if it's genetics, it's USUALLY a case of type 1 diabetes
I'm a type 1 and got it from my grandma
but yeah blacks do tend to be more prone to it and there are more factors than just diet, you're right.

A Juvenile Diabetic is prone to giving their children type 2 later in life. Genetics plays a part, though it isn't always the case.

Anecdotal evidence is not necessarily correct, and there are juvenile and onset diabetes, types 1 and 2. Type 1 is something you end up with when you're very young. Type 2 is something you get in adulthood, and lifestyle greatly influences it ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lifestyle_causes_of_diabetes_mellitus_type_2 ). All kinds of studies have shown that diabetes is related to poor diet, low exercise, smoking and drinking in excess are extremely common in type 2 diabetics.

There's also two types of diabetes, insipidus and mellitus, the former of which is completely different from what we commonly refer to as "diabetes", which is actually diabetes mellitus.

You get diabetes when your thing that distributes insulin can't keep up with your body weight so it's more likely for fat people to get it than skinny people are.
User avatar #28 - ninjagaiden (04/02/2015) [-]
I also like that I come into here with actual knowledge and I'm trying to enlighten you heathens and all I get are multiple thumb downs. I mean, I'll take the thumbs if I have too, it's more than worth it to give all of you a correct understanding of this disease. Because it's no joke. It's not my fault I see more skinny people with diabetes... Skinny people can eat just as bad as fat people... Skinny people can be just as unhealthy as fat people. It all boils down to genetics. If you got the stuff then you are a lucky son of a bitch. Some people can smoke 80 years and die in their sleep peacefully and NOT from cancer.

So yeah, thumb me down more and keep on instantly assuming that fat person you see has diabetes because they're fat. Tumbler logic.
User avatar #27 - ninjagaiden (04/02/2015) [-]
Diabetes is due to either the pancreas not producing enough insulin or the cells of the body not responding properly to the insulin produced.

Fat people are just more likely because they eat more food. Most of that food being sugary garbage. Sugar is the devil. Your weight does not control or inhibit insuline production.

We still do not know everything about diabetes. Otherwise there would be a cure. Weight alone does not factor into insulin production or the lack thereof. You can be fat an healthy, it is a real thing.
User avatar #22 - ninjagaiden (04/02/2015) [-]
There are many factors to consider such as age, race, pregnancy, stress, certain medications, genetics or family history, high cholesterol and obesity.

The genetics is where it's linked. Not the fat surrounding your body. It's only linked to fat because of food. Sugar and candy and soda and all the horrible things that rot your teeth also give you diabetes.

Saying obesity is linked to diabetes is the same thing as saying AGE IS LINKED TO DIABETES.

I hate stupid twats. You can literally be the fattest fuck alive at 600LB and not have any sort of diabetes because you eat RIGHT not WRONG. Diabetes is almost composed completely of your own diet. It can be prevented with diet.
User avatar #60 - butteredhamster (04/02/2015) [-]
Haha...I just remembered my point: Do not speak of type two and act like you are covering all Diabetes types. You sound like an ass.
Gestational Diabetes-cause by stress due to pregnancy
Juvenile Diabetes-caused by genetics/age by immune system attacking islet cells
Adult Onset Diabetes-caused by genetics, age, and weight by stress to the body such as aging or obesity.
User avatar #58 - butteredhamster (04/02/2015) [-]
As a Juvenile Diabetic. Just shhhhhhhh.
You are mixing up three different types of diabetes together and hurting more than helping. My body doesn't produce insulin at all. So there are no islet cells to transfer the insulin my body doesn't produce.
What pisses me off is the fact that people like you skew facts and mix up different types of Diabetes to fit your argument.
WEIGHT, AGE, ETHNICITY, AND FAMILY HISTORY CAUSES DIABETES. END OF STORY.
Weight is a factor. Obese people put such stress on their bodies that the pancreas has a hard time keeping up. With me, my immune system destroyed my islet cells...the very cells that produce and carry insulin.
Diabetes is not composed completely from my diet. You are just as crazy as those "twats" That tell me I won't need my insulin shots if I eat apples. Yeah, we will see how well that goes when I go into a coma.
The day I was put in the hospital when I was first diagnosed and really sick, my nurse said something that stuck with me to this day: "It is nothing you said, did, or ATE. Sometimes because of genetics and the way the world works, you get sick."
Also, lastly, Type 2 is more common in old people because with age, our bodies deteriorate in different ways and sometimes that starts with the pancreas so I promise you, age is a factor just like weight which makes your second comment the most ridiculous thing I have ever read.
I lost my train of thought. You annoy me.
#47 - Ken M (04/02/2015) [-]
" AGE IS LINKED TO DIABETES." Good job figuring out that many diseases are age related.
"I hate stupid twats" commit suicide then you dumb cunt
YOU EAT SUGAR
SUGAR GOES IN BLOOD
YOU MAKE INSULIN
SUGAR GOES INTO CELLS
TOO MUCH SUGAR = TOO MUCH INSULIN
= CELLS STOP GIVING A FUCK ABOUT INSULIN
Bam, type 2 diabetes in a nutshell. Now go lose some weight.
#26 - iqequalzero (04/02/2015) [-]
There is a correlation between being overweight, and having diabetes. You may not be diabetic BECAUSE you are fat, but statistics dont lie.

User avatar #30 - ninjagaiden (04/02/2015) [-]
I literally just explained to you why more fat people seem to have diabetes. Fat people eat more. Diabetes is caused by sugar. The scientific community has basically PINPOINTED THIS FACT. Don't eat sugar and you are very likely to NEVER HAVE DIABETES.

Believe it or not fat people are just as likely to not like candy as a skinny person.
The correlation between being overweight and diabetes is DIET DIET DIET DIET DIET. THE CORRELATION YOU ARE SEEING IS DIET. Also, some peoples bodies are just fucked up and don't act right.
