Jesus Christ was is wrong with you? I'm not going to chastise the show - it's just writing the story and doing it reasonably well.
But how can you call that situation anything other than rape? She didn't consent - she just didn't have the option to say "no". She had sex against her will with a man she did not want to have sex with. Literally, the definition of rape is what occurred.
#29 - dubh (05/21/2015) [-]
I can't even believe we're having this conversation.
I'm telling you it was rape. It was absolutely, and without any margin for confusion, sexual assault.
Even if she agreed to the marriage, Ramsay Bolton raped her.
End of fucking story.
#38 - Nohelpforu (05/21/2015) [-]
You couldn't rape your wife in medieval times, a marriage contract makes you property, it's only rape in our eyes with modern lenses, the time period its recreating is fucked up, but rape is defined by the time period its in, and in this one, it wasn't rape, it was however a thing that fills all our requirements of being rape. In short your both morons for bothering to argue the semantics of it.
#328 - Absolute Madman (05/22/2015) [-]
So in other words, you say it isnt rape, get called out on it, then try to bring "for the time period it represents" into it as if that was somehow part of your original argument.

You may have meant it that way originally, but you cant call people dumb for not agreeing with you the way you presented it originally.

While I completely agree that what constituted as rape in the medicals times is very different from how it is seen now and I think that shit's interesting , that is not the argument at hand. Modern day people are viewing it as at rape. Even those who are right now who not viewing it as rape are modern day people, ergo, should be on the same semantic page. What i mean is, they shouldn't say/argue, "Wow, what the fuck is wrong with Ramsay's dad?! Why isn't he calling that rape and stopping his son!? My god how fucked up is he?!", because those actors are supposed to have the mindset of those in the medieval times and are adhering to their cultural cues and norms . But that isn't the issue. We aren't debating about how character's should feel or not in regards to other characters. They are, rather, arguing what we, modern-day people, define rape as.

Your fact is insightful and interesting, but I don't believe it is relevant to current squabble.
#505 - Absolute Madman (05/22/2015) [-]
Thats exactly the thing, you cant just say: "It was definitely rape" since you can look at it in two ways, Yes from a modern perspective it is rape and no, from the universes perspective it is not rape. As such saying it is stupid as it is both rape yet not rape, simply depending on which way you look at it
User avatar #514 - livefromtokyo (05/23/2015) [-]
well, yes, you can look at it in both ways, but my point is we have the ability to use words to illustrate in which view we are meaning.

But then again you say form the universal perspective, I'm sorry, i cant tell if english is your first language But when one says , "universal" it means worldwide. Current-day worldwide.

Tyrion married her, and chose not to have sex with her unless she wanted it. Because Tyrion is not a rapist. Rape is forced sex, married or not.
User avatar #96 - hoponthefeelstrain (05/21/2015) [-]
but did she really know how screwed he was in the head? She never saw him be an asshole and I think she figured Myranda was just trying to scare her with lies. Also her last husband was willing to wait for her to be comfortable, I think she was naive and thought ramsay would say the same.
#26 - dubh (05/21/2015) [-]
She agreed because she had no choice.
Because if she said no, she'd be killed.
She might have agreed to stay in Winterfell, she may have agreed to marry Ramsay, but only because she had no other option. That's important. No other option
That is the definition of rape. She has been forced into agreeing to a sexual relationship with a sadistic lunatic.
User avatar #374 - dantemp (05/22/2015) [-]
SHE IS NEVER GETTING KILLED BY THE BOLTONS. They need her to make their claim to the north stand stronger. And she could've refused but she wanted to stay and fight for Winterfell. She continues to have the option to escape, but she specifically stated that she is at home and not afraid. The only, THE ONLY argument I can even consider that justifies labeling this as rape is the threat of physical violence, death is absolutely out of the question.
User avatar #97 - msypsylon (05/21/2015) [-]
That's not completely true, she wouldn't have been killed, she's the "key to the north" and she knows it. You could argue that it's rape because she clearly didn't want it, but it was her choice to go through it, in order to accomplish her goals. Littlefinger convinced her that she had to "play the game" in order to avenge her family and take back what's hers and that's exactly what she's trying to do and that's also why she married Ramsay, not because she had no other option.
In my eyes, this situation is not too different from a prostitute who desperately needs money so she resorts to fucking disgusting men for it, despite hating every second of it and I don't think many people would call that rape.
User avatar #299 - livefromtokyo (05/22/2015) [-]
I wouldn't call an independent women who voluntarily prostitutes as raped. (Like a girl/guy who is earning money for for medical school or to feed her/his drug addiction)

But I would call a prostitute who was kidnaped and forced/trapped into prostitution by way of force and manipulation as raped.

my point is just a friendly reminder that there are different types of prostitutes. But personally I would view Sansa as being raped because I think she's smart enough (finally) to know that she has no way out of the situation. She would have been killed, or tortured, life is horribly unkind to her, I mean even her last "friend" little finger sold her (and tried to feed her some bullshit about reclaiming the north). She's trying to survive. And I personally think that if a man or woman has to have sex actually to stay live, mentally or physically- then it's rape. But I know that different cultures define it differently.
User avatar #27 - dxninjaxo (05/21/2015) [-]
Some people say they would rather die, clearly Sansa is not one of them. There's bound to be fucked up shit happening in the show and all I'm saying is that it's barely even rape if at all. She agreed.

I totally agree with that. I mean she IS his wife and it WAS their wedding night. wtf do you expect? u guys act like tumblr. Turn time backwards a couple of hundreds of years and realize that back then there were a little different habbits and laws so shut the fuck up about the "omg rape" thing. Wasnt even rape to begin with since she is legally his wife. And to all the people who say that she had no choice: It was her decison to trust and follow littlefucker and turning down Briennes offer to help her. So yeah... taking a dick isnt the worst thing that could ve happened to you in that case.

User avatar #371 - dantemp (05/22/2015) [-]

Yes it was.
Don't even fucking pretend it wasn't.
User avatar #370 - dantemp (05/22/2015) [-]
I talked about this with my girlfriend, she hasn't watched it so I described it:

- she married a violent psycho - OK
- she was warned about his habits - OK
- Sansa said that this is her home and she is not afraid - OK
- She didn't resisted in any way - OK
- She had to do it while her childhood friend was forced to watch - OK
- She cried - Oh no, then it's definitely rape

I can't argue with this, I give up. I don't think it can be classified as rape and Sansa was not that much of a victim. more like a participant in a battle that took a serious punch, but the majority of people want to label this as a rape. Nothing more I can do about it.
User avatar #78 - masdercheef (05/21/2015) [-]

User avatar #25 - dxninjaxo (05/21/2015) [-]
She agreed beforehand. She knows having a wedding means you have to consumate the marriage. I'm not saying it's not fucked up that Reek was in the room, or that he roughly took her virginity, but she agreed beforehand knowing how fucked up Ramsey is. It's not even close to as bad as what happened in the book.
