But didn't The Killing Joke explain the origin of the joker?

Nah, he says that he forgot most of the reason why he became the Joker, and that the story that was told in the Killing Joke was one of many versions. "If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!" was a line he used.

Um...yes and no?

It wasn't supposed to be made canon but DC loved it so much they made it canon. Alan Moore hated the story (like he so often does when it comes to DC). Anyhow this story is showing a universe in which Bruce's becomes Batman...only for NONE of his rogue gallery to show up. This cause our pointy ear friend to worry about his life choices and go into breakdowns for days on end. Alfred, hired his friends to pose as Batman's colorful rogue gallery with Alfred taking the lead as The Joker.

However, after several years Bruce figured out that it was all a scam, however one of the actors, Eddie Nash, get very deep into his role as the riddler and kidnaps several children.

Alfred pleads with Bruce NOT to go after Eddie since the police could handle him, however Bruce want to deal with Eddie himself...

The picture explains the rest.

Words fail me, I fucking love that story.
