Hello there, i beg your pardon for interrupting. But my friend here mrskeletonman wanted to be an skeleton, but i think that i, being a more experienced dnd player than he is, could explain it better. While it is true, skeletons are mindless, undead or deathless, they can be given intelligence with a spell. Awaken undead. sadly, it only specifies int. So it can be tweaked so he can have wis and cha as well, because he tecnically has normal sentience like a normal human. What do you think of this?
User avatar #17 - dragonstew (10/16/2014) [-]
Actually, that would work. However, a skeleton would still have a charisma score of 1, even after the Awaken Undead spell. Since the spell doesn't specify it changes wisdom or charisma, it wouldn't under normal circumstances. A charisma, wisdom, and intelligence score below 10 makes any and all spellcasting impossible, and therefore no mages.

Normally I don't allow things this advanced in beginner campaigns so we could keep the focus on learning the mechanics of the game, but it's been a while since I've done a campaign and I suppose I could make an exception and allow the Awaken Undead spell to bump up charisma and wisdom (as well as bring intelligence to a level above NPC grunt).

However, mrskeletonman , I'll only allow it on one condition, and it's the same condition I give to all of my players who want to bend the rules a bit. If you can make up a good backstory as to how your character became this way before story of the campaign, you can play as a skeleton awoken with the Awake Undead spell, including the boosted charisma and wisdom. We'll treat it as if you were building for the necropolitan race like I described in the PMs (same point buy limitations and whatnot), because this is basically just a really roundabout way of giving the already really powerful necropolitan template damage reduction and immunity to cold while removing the XP penalty. This makes it an *extremely* powerful race. If you would rather play a deathless skeleton, write for that instead. Sound fair?

Hmmm, okay then. There is also an alternative, from the Eberron campaign, I think:
Deathless is a new creature type, describing creatures that
have died but returned to a kind of spiritual life. They are
similar in many ways to both living creatures and undead.
However, while undead represent a mockery of life and a
violation of the natural order of life and death, the deathless
merely stave off the inevitability of death to accomplish
a righteous purpose. While undead draw their power from
the plane of Mabar, the Endless Night, the deathless are
strongly tied to the plane of Irian, the Eternal Day, the
birthplace of all souls. In fact, the deathless are little more
than disincarnate souls, sometimes wrapped in material
flesh, often incorporeal and hardly more substantial than
a soul in its purest state.
It's from an official DnD book, I heard. And it can be a skeleton.
User avatar #14 - dragonstew (10/16/2014) [-]
I'm familiar with deathless actually, but not from Eberron. I don't know much about the published campaign settings I've never even heard of "Mabar" or "Irian" , but the deathless is in the Book of Exalted Deeds, a supplemental book for good-aligned characters.

The thing is, "deathless" is a creature type, or category of creatures, not an actual creature. Saying that you play a deathless character is like saying you play an undead character: it doesn't actually specify a race. If you would like to play a deathless character instead of an undead character, that would actually make things a lot easier since you can be healed by regular healing spells, you would be generally good-aligned instead of evil-aligned, etc. However, a deathless skeleton still doesn't have an intelligence score, and therefore cannot be played.

I've only been in one game, and it's one rule that the DM followed consistently was to roll for actions, while pretty much anything else goes. Aside from that, I haven't been in any actual D&D games. If that qualifies me as a non-beginner, then that's fine, I'll just look for another game for beginners.

Don't worry, if I get enough people who want to play, but can't because this one is beginner-only, I'll consider starting a second campaign for non-beginners. It will probably be the same story, just with harder monsters and stuff. Think "New Game+" style.

ive only ever played pathfinder, tho that may be similar.

Greetings once again, friend. When I, mrskeletonman, asked Mr. Dndxplain about skeletons, it appeared that one could play as a skeleton. It does not appear to be very official, but do you think that it could be done?
www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Skeletons,_Variant_ (3.5e_Race)
Feels like I, mrskeletonman, already asked that question earlier, though.
User avatar #12 to #11 - dragonstew (10/16/2014) [-]
Sorry to be *that guy*, but that's a homebrew race, and I don't allow homebrew. I'm usually very open with what I allow, and I'll take pretty much anything from any official Wizards book (and some other d20 books case-by-case), but my one stipulation is no homebrew. Most people who design races or classes (especially for the wiki) just build stuff that looks or sounds cool, regardless of actual in-game effect.

The thing is, this race is strictly worse in almost every way than the necropolitan race I was showing you before. I really like the necropolitan race, and I don't mind at all flavoring it to be a skeleton. If you'd prefer, I could look for another alternative instead.

Hey man. Quite a few people want to become part of our game. Sadly, there are a few too many, and form what I, mrskeletonman, have seen, most of them are first timers. We should really talk with everyone at once to know who will, and who won't be able to join, alright?
