Preventing mastitis is a dairy farmer's goal...
Mastitis does not lead to "pus in the milk". The cows are regularly tested, and considering it costs hundreds of dollars to cure mastitis, you better be damn sure that the equipment does not have e.coli (main cause for mastitis) present. How the hell are you going to keep a bacteria from flourishing without a sanitation process? The teats are dipped in iodine as well, before AND after milking. The entire milking process (yes, even the machines) are designed to maximize production while minimizing loss.
I am a vet student in a university that is focused on agriculture and cattle. I've milked cattle in a milking parlor.
