The NASA rocket that was supposed to resupply the ISS about a year ago malfunctioned. It didn't explode on its own, the NASA HQ activated a remote self destruct. They did this to prevent the (obviously) dangerous rocket from veering off towards or into civilians, buildings, or populated areas.

This wasn't NASA, this was Orbital Sciences. Orbital Sciences is a private company that does ISS resupply missions for NASA, but they also do other stuff for other people from time to time, although these days ISS resupply is the vast majority of the stuff they do.

And also while they did use the detonation system, it wouldn't have prevented it from veering off much, but rather prevented it from hitting the launch pad and doing even more $$$ of damage.

Source: me, I watch rocket launches the way most people watch football games, and have seen almost every single orbital rocket launch of the last 3 years or so. I also built a thing that went to space (but not orbit) at Wallops Island in a program with NASA just a few weeks before this happened which made it have more impact to me since I "lived" went on vacation for a NASA student program thing? in that town for about a week.

I presume it was unmanned?

Yes, thankfully.
Also thankfully, the Russians were able to perform their resupply mission without a hitch, allowing the crew on the ISS to survive.
