From a policy standpoint, you're correct, Reaganomics was pretty damn awful.

From a foreign policy standpoint though, Reagan was critical to navigating the US through the Unions final years before it broke up.

I honestly don't know what is so awful about Reganomics. Could someone explain (With some kind of supporting evidence) why it is so bad?
#176 - anon (08/12/2016) [-]
Here's how it works in a nutshell.

It's also called 'Trickle Down Economics', and a way to visualize it is by imagining a bunch of water glasses stacked in a pyramid with water being poured into the one at the top. In theory, as the one at the top fills up and overfills, water spills into the ones below it. In practice, however, the top glass just gets bigger to accomodate the additional water with little to nothing making it past the first level or so.

In economical terms, the idea was to lower taxes on the rich so that they'd spend more, but the problem is that the TRULY rich people actually DON'T spend money on trivial things, they invest it in things that make themselves even richer, and/or they abuse loopholes in the tax code to pay even less taxes, or even no taxes at all.

The idea isn't for the rich to spend it on trivial things though. Investment is the idea. They invest the money, and it is used to create jobs and grow the economy. Also, the rick only try to avoid taxes because they are taxed so much. You lower their taxes, and less of them will try to avoid them

The plan was to Give money to big business to pay workers more, but it only causes more companies to move to cheaper countries

The principle is actually sound. Taxes are, of course, on income, so it stands to reason that as the average income rises the average revenue also rises. Additionally, if more families are employed the expenses required to run medicare, medicaid, and welfare go down significantly. Reagan had the right idea here. Unfortunately, Reagan's tax cuts focused mainly on reducing taxes for the rich, which is very much the wrong way to go about it. When the rich have low taxes and there is a strong market available, they tend to invest their money in ventures and companies, which leads to economic growth. However, when taxes are increased or left the same on the lower income brackets, the amount of money the middle and lower class spend on purchasing products doesn't go up, which means that even though businesses are being invested in, their money isn't actually generating strong returns.

When you have a market with low income taxes all around and exemptions on those who purchase a lot (families with children) then the demand for goods remains strong. When this is backed up with a liberated, relatively untaxed upper class, as well as other specific conditions which can easily be obtained, it results in an explosion of new businesses due to the upper class feeling they can get an enormous return on their money through investment. Trump's policy echoes Reagan's with the addition that taxes are reduced on middle and low incomes as well. For example: in my family, where my mother makes 52,000 a year and has one dependent, she saves over $4,000, not to mention reimbursements for medical costs. Now, in my family, that is a fuckload of money. We haven't actually bought a new care in ages, we've just gotten the spare from our grandparents when they downsized their house (it's a great car though, love it). For my mother, if she continued her expenses for 7 years, she could buy a decently-priced new car. Hell, she could even go on vacation once a year, or stop working extra classes in the summer

People spend money, or they invest money. No rich person keeps their extra cash in a box under their bed, they have security, so they invest it, which is what allows businesses to grow. Reagan fucked it up because he didn't allow a market to grow, but Trump addresses this concern very effectively.

I don't know all the finer details about the policies, so I will take your word on this for the moment. However, I do know that when Regan entered office there was massive inflation going on in the economy, and the only way to stop it would cause a recession for a period of time. After that the economy would grown. I know that Regan stepped in and caused that recession to happen, which in turn helped to fix the economy overall.

Now I don't know if this is directly related to what you are talking about, but it may have been connected.

Well, it honestly depends who you ask. Most economists, even some die-hard Keynesians, will tell you that the economic fluctuations really have nothing to do with legislation.
User avatar
#191 - manter (08/13/2016) [-]
Generally, the economists I have spoken to say that legislation generally hurts the economy. Other than that, it has it's own natural ups and downs.
