still, "self upkeep" is fairly arbitrary. You can put a lot of effort into your appearance and still be breaking school rules. Also, the responsibility the school should teach should be centered around work ethics. I've been in a school with a rigid dress code and lax teaching standards. It shouldn't be a high priority in any school, in my opinion.
User avatar #142 - KRIPTON (21 hours ago) [-]
Dress code in the UK, is there for the poverty gap, you have a set uniform, you all look the same, rich or poor generally speaking where the same cloths, shoes etc.

#139 - billburr (21 hours ago) [-]
I agree 100% as long as the code is reasonable and evenly applied. When you see codes that require skirts as opposed to pants for women I think that becomes a problem though

The point of the post is probably the bullshit reasons girls are being sent home for, like the girl who's bra-strap was visible. That's just plain fucking retarded.
#57 - questionableferret (12/19/2014) [-]
That's part of the reason why the UK still imposed a uniform in most schools. It cuts down on clothes-related bullying, it promotes unity, makes it easy to identify which kids come from which schools on school trips, gets them ready for work-clothes, etc...

Really there are some enormous benefits to uniforms that aren't outweighed by the positives of not having them. Plus, in the UK we use it for charity too, having days where kids can come in in their home clothes if they pay a pound to do so, which then is given to charity. It makes the days more anticipated and breaks up the monotony every now and then.

Even as a Kid I've never understood the US schooling system. From the lack of uniforms to the pledge of allegiance (does that still happen? Even the name of that propaganda is fucking terrifying) I've never understood it.

Do schools in the US have houses? In the UK many schools have houses named after saints or some shit which promotes unity and healthy competition during events like sports days, etc.
#65 - pkashp (12/19/2014) [-]
Some of the more urban schools in or near cities have dress codes, but they get less prevalent in the more rural areas. I went to high school (9-12) in a rural area, the dress code was pretty lax, but I never saw any problems arise because of it aside from the "scene" kids occasionally not wearing shoes to raise awareness for cancer or some shit. They got sent home for that.

The pledge of allegiance is done at the start of every school day and the national anthem is played at the start of every sporting event. Standing and saluting is pretty much mandatory at both, unless you're disabled. The kids don''t really stop and think about how creepy it is, just because it's been so ingrained in their heads since their very first day of school. Anybody who does ask about it never receives a satisfactory answer for why they do it.

US schools don't have houses, ever, not one school out of the many I've attended. I suppose you could kind of picture each school as it's own house, competing against the other schools. There was a lot of inter-school competition at my last school, though being in the middle of redneck-land there wasn't a whole lot else to do. The competition was fairly healthy, except for "that one school," who, if this was a Harry Potter type thing, would be the Slytherin of the Houses. Come to think of it, their colors are even green. Dicks.

tl;dr Sometimes Dress code, pledge of allegiance is creepy but standard, and no houses.

Every school I've ever seen in the UK has a dress code and even the pure catholic ones don't really shove any rhetoric down the kid's throats besides occasionally having them attend church as a school which, frankly speaking, they should have been doing anyway if they were Catholics. Some hymns in assembly but only the fun stuff. In the UK we take religion a lot less seriously than it is taken in the US and I say that as a kid who went to three different purely catholic schools. The UK just isn't as dogmatic about faith as you find in the US and the comedians have been riffing it since long before Life of Brian (I'll put them in a different comment. I'm running short on lines.

The house system is usually similar to the one seen in Hogwarts but generally it's less strict and most classes are put together regardless of house-affiliation. The houses are really just there for kids to rally together when sporting events start up.

Most schools aren't very competitive in the UK so very rarely do you find schools pitting kids against kids from other schools. It used to happen more often but once the free, comprehensive schools started popping up that kinda stopped. There are some exceptions, like Hagley and Heybridge High which are two competing High Schools that are literally situated right across the road from one-another. One's Catholic and the other is unaffiliated and the two compete a lot. It's odd since you see the kids coming out of both schools at the same time and walking down either side of the road in different uniforms.

Universities though? Holy shit the Universities can get competitive. It's healthy competition but it is fucking historic like the Oxbridge Mellon Boat Race that has been a nationally-broadcast annual event for nearly 150 years now. (Pictured Left)
#84 - anonymous (23 hours ago) [-]
Just FYI, every comprehensive school I've ever been to has had football, netball, hockey, rugby and athletics teams. We competed regionally and sometimes nationally if you are put forward. Every county in our country has a county football team, accrued from players from school teams throughout the respective counties (I think rugby possibly follows suit). Athletics events are held at special tracks annually, although a lot of the tracks are seeing closure sadly.

Otherwise, you're spot on (our houses were named after sporting venues, our contemporary school's was the names of old boats).

Comicexplain, what's the best series to read to get into the Guardians of the Galaxy. I heard the movie is better having some background on the characters through the comics. Just looking for suggestions as I'm pretty clueless in that area,
User avatar #387 to #386 - comicexplain ONLINE (08/20/2014) [-]
Honestly, I suggest starting from the beginning, or if you'd like, from each of their separate origin stories, in order to get the collective sphere of information! The movie is actually best to watch first, in order to get the devil of the details!

Cool deal. Any specific titles I should look for to get the origin stories?
Also ever read Atomic Robo, that's one of my favorites.

No, no problem. Mostly it's just me trying to pin down exactly what I want to go back to school for and I have some non-school options here. I went down to a radio-broadcast job fair last Wednesday and some of the people there had some good interest in me doing voice work so I might try and get a demo tape together sometime soon.

Still doing dance? What've you got going on?
User avatar #363 to #362 - WindblownRebel (06/26/2013) [-]
I need to find a new place to dance, there's really only lessons available here that I found online. Basically, a lot of staying home and resting up after school and moving here (AKA sleeping like 13 hours a day.) I made a few friends this year before finals, and they had me over for a party... which wasn't a disaster like I had anticipated.

Able to add me back on Skype? I tend to not use FJ as a messaging system these days.
