Im unfamiliar with american cars but i will say that hondas are really reliable and cheaper to maintain especially since america has made like a million honda accords, which would mean you would easily find new parts for any honda.

Honda's in the same boat in regards to that 0w20 oil. But you have a bigger selection of filters, which are cheaper and easier to find, and usually much easier to replace. Long story short, a top-tier oil filter for a Honda will often run the same price as a pleb-tier oil filter for a new Toyota. Also, Toyota's internal filters usually require a special filter wrench. You can find it for about $20 though, so it's no big deal. Just something to consider if you plan on doing maintenance yourself.

All that said, I can't speak to any differences in quality between the two makes. That's probably the most important thing at the end of the day. But if that comes down to a draw, I'd take Honda simply for the easier maintenance.

With 18k tops i would get an NEW optioned out Honda Fit

-5 star crash rating
-Fits five sort of (better than any other in its class)
-All trims have back up cameras
-Its a hatch so can more versatile than a sedan
-33 city/ 41 hwy
-Starting price of 15,650 (and that gets you AC, power windows, and a back up camera)
-Its a Honda, so its good for 300k+

The only thing i dont know much about it is the CVT trans
#17017 - mcginger (06/30/2015) [-]
You can get it with an automatic six speed if memory serves me correct. It's been a while since I did the new car module for the new fits but I'm pretty sure the come with a manual, cvt, or 6 speed auto. They are nice cars but the cvt trans is kinda boring and annoying if you are like me and enjoy hearing the engine go through the gears
User avatar #16962 - chikibriki (06/27/2015) [-]

Well, the oil pump decided to stop being an oil pump, and has choosen the life of static metal parts with no movement whatsoever, so there's an engine swap in progress.
But it never had AC anyway, and i'm never planning on installing one.

I'd say at the very least you should be open to hatchback options. I know in the $15k range there isn't much that can beat a Kia Soul base as far as standard equipment goes. Other things to look for would definitely be used cars, you can get what was originally a $25k car that's only a couple years old, and that would also drive down insurance price.

2014 Kia Optima EX

Asking price 18k
$321 Per Month

2014 Chevrolet Cruze LTZ

Asking price 14.8k
$264 Per Month

2015 Toyota Corolla S

Asking price 15.9k
$283 Per Month

2014 Dodge Dart SXT
8k miles
Asking price 15k
$265 Per Month

The Toyota is by far the most reliable brand in my list but that Optima is such a good looking car. I also know a few people how own the Cruze and from what I hear it's a great little economy car.
Just make sure you get a trusted mechanic to look at the car you want to buy. Even the most reliable car makers in the world can make lemons.
User avatar #16948 - LSone (06/27/2015) [-]
Say no to the Dart. Agree to the rest of them
User avatar #16956 - larsfillmore (06/27/2015) [-]
Is the dart really that bad?
User avatar #16959 - LSone (06/27/2015) [-]
Yeah, Its based off a Alfa romeo (so there is going to be problems right away) and its shoddy quality.

Here is JD powers Initial Quality Study for the 2015 Dart. Note that it was never above about average.

I'm not naysaying the Toyota crowd, but be aware that most of their newer cars are supposed to use 0w20 motor oil, which is only available in full synthetic. If don't do your own oil changes, it gets expensive.
User avatar #16930 - delio (06/26/2015) [-]

if you're looking for a good reliable sedan you can't beat toyota's and nissan's
User avatar #16945 - fukkentyranitar (06/26/2015) [-]
Nissans aren't exactly reliable. Especially anything with a V6 and cvt. The V6s destroy themselves and the CVTs break like christmas ornaments. Toyota or Honda are best for reliability. They're also easier and cheaper to maintain.
User avatar #16931 - delio (06/26/2015) [-]

if you're looking for reliable sedans i'd go with toyota

my brother (half) and his wife both have toyota's
his is a 2002 camry @ 232k miles
hers is a 2009 camry @ 94k miles about idk somewhere around there
my grandma owns a 2005 corrola and its at 116k
all are going strong with no major problems except the body on my brothers has so much duct tape to repair random shit
User avatar #16917 - citruslord (06/26/2015) [-]
Not much knowledge myself yet. But for new, I've had a Mazda 3 for a while now, and it's a nice car around that range.
I've also heard that buying used cars from local police departments is a good idea. They're supposed to take care of them reasonably well, and are reliable overall.
User avatar #16932 - delio (06/26/2015) [-]
I really want to get one but out of curiosity, how much is your insurance? I was told it gets counted like a sports car so it has a higher insurance rate

You can get a good one for 1.5k and as long as you do the basic maintenance it'll last you a long time I'm talking about all city vehicles
