They weren't using the Gatling gun since it didn't come around until the mid 1860s. The gun they used in Assassin's Creed is from who knows where, probably something they just pulled out of their asses.

There have been many repeating weapons built during the centuries. Some worked better than others. There was one(cant think of the name) that used different shells for different enemies. Muslims got the squares shells. And the Christians got the normal ones. Needless to say,it was expensive,hard to use,and wasnt very popular.

Yea, I don't think guards used it a lot in AC2, but AC2 + other Ezio games takes place during the end of the 15th century, and guns had been around for a long time.

Though, not as small as the one Ezio has(This is the reason Ezio questions the possibility of creating a such gun, when Leonardo wants to)
