Don't listen to that guy with the wall(s) of text. I think it's pretty good. It's like a slight mix between anime and american cartoons, the animation is really good, especially the fight scenes, and the plot seems to be pretty good so far, although I'm hoping it speeds up a bit. Like octaviano said though, if you get bored, just wait until episode 8 comes up. Also, there are 4 trailers you can watch for it. There's a trailer for red, white, black, and yellow.

Ignore those other two. RWBY is good but there is an awful lot wrong with it at the same time. It's not a must-watch and there's a lot to irritate you if you're one of the people who 'can't switch their brain off' like I am. (Though I don't see why that's a bad thing, personally.)
The theme-song has amateur lyrics, the writing is awkward and the voice-actors range from passible to terrible. It's not really their fault though as the writing feels very, very reminiscent of an anime that was translated into English, only it was written in English this time so the usual excuses for it don't hold water.
The animation in the fights is very good, as is normal for Monty Oum but don't expect the laws of physics to be observed in any of the fights. The animation outside of the fights feels very much like the animators had ADD as the characters never seem to stand still. When the models move they move a lot as if the animators were afraid we'd get bored if the characters didn't bounce about all over the place.
The plot so-far is also very standard and nothing too surprising has happened. There's the odd contrivance and it's clear the writing is only there to support the fight-scenes. It is very, very obvious that Monty is used to only animating action scenes and is un-accustomed to any other part of the creative process.
That said, there are some really good elements to it. Visually it is a delight and whilst there's the occasional cliché'd shot or two it's not common enough to be a problem. The humour mostly falls flat as it is very anime-inspired and that kind of humour doesn't translate well to the English language. That said, I've laughed more than a few times when the jokes work and whilst the main characters have yet to do anything to make me really like them the side-characters are a joy to watch whenever they do anything.
I'd still recommend it but know what you're getting into beforehand.

What are we considering the average as whilst the animation in the fight-scenes is good the animation elsewhere is riddled with fundamental problems and the writing is far from good.
There's few things in the series (besides many of the jokes being painfully unfunny) that can really be considered bad but conversely there's a lot to be desired if the series is ever to really be 'good'. It's worth your time to watch if you've got the patience to overlook the myriad flaws (similar to the first season of Red vs Blue) but have our standards dropped so low that being 'worth watching' is enough to make something good?
RWBY's big problem is that it attempts to do a lot of things and fails on a lot of them. It's evident they're attempting to copy the same form of humour found in Pinkie Pie (from MLP) with Nora but the lack of experience of the writing team really shows with some of her jokes. With that kind of character the jokes are only funny if the writers put a lot of thought into them and whilst for the most part she's really enjoyable to watch it's not as consistent as it could be.
The big problem with the writing of the series though is the dialogue. If you've ever watched a dubbed anime you'll be able to spot a number of obvious similarities in the dialogue of RWBY from the contrived nature of some lines to the painfully corny nature of others.
The voice actors are also a problem. Half because of their inexperience but half because the writing requires them to be a LOT better than they are for it to work.
Much like with RvB I expect the series is going to improve with time but whilst RvB was a very simple construct that gained complexity as it grew, slowly climbing the ladder of quality; RWBY is ambitious as all hell and tried to jump a few rungs but is having trouble holding on.

I disagree. If you want to watch the series without finishing it, watch Dead Fantasy or Haloid or anything else monty worked on before Rooster Teeth. Just watching episode eight is worthless as you're just watching action for the sake of action, which is what Monty's speciality is, then there's no point watching RWBY as the rest of Monty's non character-driven works are just as good at that.
RWBY is Monty attempting (not terribly successfully but a decent attempt at least) to incorporate a stronger narrative to his fight scenes and it does show in the low quality of the writing for the most part but because of that the fights are heavily supported by the context you get from watching the rest of the series. It's fun to see characters you've gotten to know in action scenes and that works much better when in context.
A good example is how Ruby's trailer of her fighting werewolves really isn't anywhere near as interesting as her component part played in episode eight.
