compare these laptops and their prices and tell me that macs are high-quality

#48 - snellthxreference (07/01/2015) [-]
You're an idiot. . You'd suggest comparing a Macbook Pro Retina with a shitty Dell Inspirion, that's not even Dell's ultrabook competetior to the Macbook. You have to look at their XPS model. Let's look at the price of a Dell XPS 13 laptop shall we?

Starting at $1549:
8gb RAM / 256gb SSD / 3200x1800p display / Core i7 5500U / 7 hour battery life
+ borderless display
+ smallest 13 inch laptop on the market

Now lets look at the "overpriced" Macbook that all the windows virgin gamers constantly hate on:

Starting at $1499:
2.7ghz 5th gen core i5 / 8GB ram / 256 SSD / 2560x1600p display / 11 hour battery life
+ By far the best trackpad on the market
+ Force touch

Tell me again how Macs aren't high quality? Macbook Pros have consistently won best laptop on the market awards every single year for years now.

User avatar #59 - yuichka (07/01/2015) [-]
idk maybe im wrong but maybe he means WAY TOO COSTY for such "quality".

As you can get same performance for twice less the price.

#70 - snellthxreference (07/01/2015) [-]
Well okay then mister. If you truly believe that you can get Macbook performance for half the price can you please show me a link to where I can buy such a product? Because that would truly be an amazing thing. Too bad it doesn't exist. What to prove me wrong?
Find me a laptop that fits this criteria:
* Has a screen resolution of 2560x1600p or higher
* Has an IPS panel or better (like OLED for instance)
* has a high quality, brushed aluminium unibody design (or other type of metal, no plastic junk)
* minimum 2.7ghz 5th generation Core i5 CPU or better
* 11 hours of battery life or better
* is thin and weighs less than 1.5kg / 4lbs (ish)
* fully back lit keyboard
* comes with a small, light weight charger and not a giant brick
* has the best mouse / track pad on the market
* 8gb ram
* 256gb SSD with the fastest flash storage on the market

All of the above for less than $750, because the Macbook Pro Retina offers all of that for $1500, while the Dell XPS only offers about half of that and costs $1549, same goes with models from Lenovo and Asus.

Find me that $750 laptop and I'll buy it on the spot and I'll gladly transfer $250 to the paypal account of your choice.
User avatar #72 - yuichka (07/01/2015) [-]
what gpu tho?
#74 - snellthxreference (07/01/2015) [-]
Buahah, so you weren't able to find anything? the GPU from Intel is more than capable for doing tasks that people in its core market group use them for. What's the point of having 2560x1600 resolution without a "nice GPU"? so you can edit videos in 1920x1080p and still have real estate left over on your display, or so that you can view and edit your photos in high resolution, and surf the web, show/create power point presentations, watch videos/movies/ use programs with a clear and sharp display. Typical gaming nerds thinking that only the GPUs matter when most people don't even need a GPU in a computer. I'm still waiting for Macbook Pro performance for $750. Believe me, you won't find a better laptop than the Macbook Pro for under $1500, and that's what the MBP costs.
User avatar #76 - yuichka (07/01/2015) [-]
also mate im not talking about laptops because laptops are overpriced EVERYWHERE whether it's asus or apple, it doesn't matter. Im talking about desktop pc's, you can get better performance for twice less the money.
#77 - snellthxreference (07/01/2015) [-]
The laptop I'm talking about is the fairly standard edition of the Macbook Pro Retina found on Apple's main website:

You should check reviews like Endgadet, CNET, anadtech etc that to tests of the display (brightness, contrast, etc) battery life, CPU benchmarks and so on. Many places list the Macbook Pro Retina as the best laptop on the market.

PC mags lists the Macbook Air as #1:

CNET calls the Macbook best ultra portable laptop, Macbook Pro 2nd best 13" laptop after the Dell XPS 13

As for desktops, Macs aren't made for gaming and therefore will NEVER target hardcore PC gamers, and will therefore never be able to compete with price to performance ratio of custom built windows desktop. However, not everyone plays games and not everyone wants a big-bulk of a desktop, but a smarter, all-in one machine like the iMac Retina, which comes with a stunning 5K display. It costs $2300 which seems like a lot if you look at its CPU, Ram, SSD etc, but the only other 5K display on the market is from Dell and costs $2500. the iMac Retina gives you a "decent" computer + 5K display for $2300. $200 less than what Dell charges for the monitor alone. Once again, Apple is providing great value, for enthusiasts.

But don't get me wrong, I'm no Apple fanboy, in fact I have zero Apple products at the moment. My last four phones have all be Android (Galaxy S6, LG G3, Galaxy S4 & S3) and I have a gaming PC + a shitty Windows laptop which I am looking forward to swapping out for a Macbook Pro.
User avatar #80 - yuichka (07/02/2015) [-]
not to mention it has twice the ram and a better processor.

the only "bad" thing people may say is not having a 5k display which again, is COMPLETELY useless for everyday usage, and it's just a matter of taste.
User avatar #79 - yuichka (07/02/2015) [-]
Okay, first of all, tell me whats the point of 5k display on 13" monitor if you're planning to do only software, 1080p is enough.

a 15.6" laptop at the cost of 1.2K has a video card that can sustain hard video editing and such.

Really, all you can complain about the laptops that are cheaper is not having a "5k" display which agian, is COMPLETELY pointless for "software and every day usage".

For example - www.amazon.com/GL551JW-15-6-inch-i7-4720HQ-Blu-Ray-Computer/dp/B00VIWTTVA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1435854815&sr=8-1&keywords=Gaming+laptop+250gb+ssd&pebp=1435854818627&perid=18J5WKY03JCSGAV6R63V

Now there are somewhat "custom" laptops you can configure and they build it for you, but i won't go into that, If you take the gpu out, you'll have around a 850$ laptop that works just as great, Or even for 1200 i think it's better than spending extra 300 for "5k display" when all you're going to do is browse the internet.

For 1.2k You can browse the internet, play games, and do whatever you want.

Quality of Apple is great, yes, but it's overpriced, and the only cliche people fall for is "5k" displays on 13" laptops, which is funny AF.
#81 - snellthxreference (07/02/2015) [-]
Ahh well, the problem with that laptop you posted is that its enormous. Way too thick and heavy to comfortably bring around with me to school, to my friends house, to meetings, to work, for a light travel, this applies to MANY people that want a full size laptop that they can fit in a tiny case and carry with no problems. This laptop weighs twice as much and takes up more space in a small bag / brief case. Then there's the battery life. I want a laptop that can be used for an entire day at the school library / at the office, which means 8+ hours on a single charge. the MBP lasts 11 hours, this Asus probably won't last more than 3, MAXIMUM 4.

Then there's the display.. 1080p TN (low quality) vs the high quality 2560x1600p IPS panel found in the MBP. IPS panels give vastly superior colour accuracy which makes photos, videos, text, presentations (basically everything) much more vibrant, dynamic and life like.

So as I said.. the MBP absolutely destorys that Asus in every way imagable, from practicality to deisgn, to most functions. The only thing the Asus has over it is the GPU, and most working adults / college students (like myself) don't sit around and play video games so the GPU is irrelevant. (well almost) the onboard Intel in the MBP is fine.
User avatar #82 - yuichka (07/02/2015) [-]
If it's too heavy you must have some disabilities, im sorry.

"Presentations" colors are going to be streamed through the projector, no one is going to look at your presentation through a 13" laptop.

As i said, what's the big deal with the slightly better colors if the pc is only for everyday usage? It's compleeetely useless.

You're saying you want to pay extra 300 for a weaker pc just because you want 1600p resolution on 13"?

To me it sounds like a waste of money.

XPS13 does a great job too for 300$ less www.amazon.com/Newest-Model-Dell-Ultrabook-Computer/dp/B00VWC2NBO/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1435863005&sr=1-2&keywords=Dell+XPS+13&pebp=1435863013364&perid=0B4DDMKKYQTPPVNVX1T1
#83 - snellthxreference (07/02/2015) [-]
I have no disabilities what so ever and I don't know why everyone brings that up as an argument. I'm a Men's Physique competitor, so its got nothing to do about strength, its more for the convenience. I can deadlift 200kg, but I DO NOT want to carry a 3kg laptop (+ brick charger, another kilogram or so) if I can instead carry a laptop that weighs 1.3kg and no need for charger due to 11 hour battery life.

If you could choose between a smartphone that weighs 1kg and a smartphone that weighs 0.2kg which one do you pick? you'd chose 0.2kg every single time, doesn't mean that you can't lift 1kg, its that you would rather not. If I watch video materials or view photos or surf the web at school / work, I'd like to do it with as high quality as possible. IPS > TN. It doesn't matter that much, but if I'm going to spend hours behind a screen almost every single day, why not have text as sharp as possible? (resolution) and colours as vibrant/accurate as possible? (IPS panel)

The Dell XPS 13 is an excellent laptop, just not as good as the Macbook Pro

1600p vs 1080p
IPS panel vs TN panel
slower core i5 CPU on the Dell
inferior mouse pad on the Dell (Macbook's have excellent track pads, with most Windows machines they're so shitty you're pretty much forced to bring a seperate mouse; if you haven't tried the Macbook's track pad you really should)
11 hour battery life vs 7 hour battery
The only thing the Dell is clearly superior on is that it has an "infinity" display which means smaller borders on the display = smaller size factor which is something I hope Apple fixes in their next Macbook for 2016.
User avatar #84 - yuichka (07/02/2015) [-]
Where did you bring that up..?

It's 15hr battery life

Aren't you being hypocritical..?
You say you're not planning to play games, but you complain about a SLIGHTLY slower cpu? (You can turbo boost it to Apple's speed) That just makes no sense at all.

Mouse pad is taste-sided because i for one see no difference between those two mousepads, that's called nitpicking.

It is also an IPS panel, not TN.

Why are you so misinformed? :s

The only downside of it is slightly slower cpu which makes NO difference in everyday use as you say, "no games".

And for 300 cheaper, less in size and weight. Just as compact as you want it to be

To each their own, i myself would rather get Dell that's 300 cheaper and performs very similar.

But hey, it depends whether you want OS X or Windows at the end of the day

But for a "everyday usage" laptop i'd rather stay in ~800$ range because why the hell would you need more if you're not doing anything that would justify paying 1.5k.

Here, for 1.45k you can get www.amazon.com/Newest-Model-Dell-Touchscreen-Ultrabook/dp/B00W3FQEY6/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1435870012&sr=1-1&keywords=xps13+3200x1800&pebp=1435870016110&perid=0Y0AK45HYKCFXA5XBJDC

Which has better display, resolution and colors, still 50$ cheaper than the macbook, so now it really is about OS X or Windows.

This one i linked now is better than Macbook judging on your preferences, but then again it isn't twice cheaper because i thought we're talking pc's in general and not laptop-only.

Up to you of course but i'd go xps13 over MBP if there was a choice of these two.
User avatar #75 - yuichka (07/01/2015) [-]
can you please link me to the apple product you're talking about so i can compare better? ty
User avatar #73 - yuichka (07/01/2015) [-]
because why would u have a 2560x1600 without a nice gpu, useless piece of shit.
User avatar #21 - SteyrAUG (07/01/2015) [-]
Okay, let's compare the two products you posted:

Dell laptop:
MSRP: $598.99
CPU: i3-4005U 2C/4T @ 1.7 GHz
RAM: 1x4 GB single channel
HDD: 500GB hard disk
Optical Drive: None
Screen: 1366x768
Built in webcam: Yes
Headphone/mic jack: 1

Macbook Pro:
MSRP: $1,549
CPU: Intel i5 2C/4T @ 2.5 Ghz turbo up to 3.1 Ghz
RAM: 2x2GB Dual channel
HDD: 500 GB hard disk
Optical Drive: DVD/RW
Screen: 1280x800
Built-in webcam: Yes
Headphone/mic jack: 1

So what you've proven is that a $1550 MSRP product will outperform a $600 MSRP product.

So like I said above, Apple products are really good quality, they just cost too much.
#22 - John Cena (07/01/2015) [-]
What you left out on the apple is it has a worse graphics interface, and if you upgrade the processor (making it the exact same processor as the apple) it only costs 719 which is still under half the cost of the apple, but what you all are also leaving out is apples normally come with 500 to 900 dollars worth of software where PC's don't. Apple products cost more because of that software licenses, which that software is one of the main things that make them best for art, song, and picture management.
#50 - snellthxreference (07/01/2015) [-]
Stop spewing bullshit. Compare the Macbook Pro Retina with the Dell XPS 13 (both are same size / same factors / compete in the same market) they have similar resolutions, similar panels, similar RAM, similar SSD storage and guess what? the MBPr costs $1499 and the Dell costs $1549. So I guess Windows laptops are overpriced piece of shit then, right? Using your logic that is.

So what's the difference between these two laptops then?

* The dell has thinner borders around the display giving it a smaller overall size despite having the same 13" display.

* The Macbook has a vastly superior trackpad which is easier and more comfortable to use than the P.O.S. found on the Dell.

* The Macbook's battery life is more than 4 hours LONGER than the Dell 11 hours vs 7.

Tell me again how Macbooks are shitty and overpriced please.
User avatar #23 - SteyrAUG (07/01/2015) [-]
I don't know how many times I have to say it:

Apple has good quality products, THEY JUST COST TOO MUCH
User avatar #32 - rockamekishiko (07/01/2015) [-]
THAT'S EXACTLY what makes them complete shit. They have HORRIBLE price/performance ratio
#25 - John Cena (07/01/2015) [-]
I didn't disagree with you. I just pointed out what you missed when comparing them, and also they don't cost to much they just don't advertise the software that comes with them and the licencing costs of that software if you bought them outside of an apple to use on a PC which makes them about even.
User avatar #26 - SteyrAUG (07/01/2015) [-]
I'm fairly sure that the dual channel memory and i5 automatically give a performance advantage over a newer generation on-board graphics processor.

Plus, when comparing a dell to an apple, I would take an apple over a dell any day no matter the cost or what the specs say. This comes from my university experience where we got new dell t5600 workstations at a cost of about $2700 each, and it only took two weeks for one of them to implode.
#27 - John Cena (07/01/2015) [-]
I don't blame you dell sucks ass now, but to upgrade the processor changes the price by 200 dollars. Making it a 718 dollar PC instead of the 518 (on sale) which makes it equal to the apple. Then the only difference is the dell has a stronger graphical interface, but at the end of the day if you took the software off the apple it would go down to around that price or maybe more. The mac's aren't that over priced. I was just giving my 2 cents not trying to correct or argue. Just share what I learned
User avatar #28 - SteyrAUG (07/01/2015) [-]
I apologize for taking your argument the wrong way. I agree with everything you say about hardware-wise making an apple equivalent for half (or less) of the cost. In the case of actual current hardware with competitive specs they blow, but for what they are they at least deliver a quality product.
