Well, a single 1920x1080 display is 2,073,600 pixels.
Triple 1080 is 6,220,800.
2560x1440 is 3,686,400
3840x2160 (4K) is 8,294,400

So triple 1080p surround is sorta inbetween 1440p and 4K.

My guess is with some tweaked settings you could still get around 60 FPS.

Oh yea I definitely could. Forgot to mention it was on the High preset.

Weird thing is I turned the graphics all the way up to ultra, and all the way down to low. There wasn't that much difference in visuals.

And oddly enough it ran like shit on my laptop, getting like 40-60 FPS on low, even though it can easily handle GTA 5 at high with 60+ FPS.

Opengl is one hell of a drug

True, but no shadowplay support unless using desktop capture and running the game in borderless. And then the FPS "looks" less than half as smooth as it actually is (literally having 80 FPS and it looks like 30). Also no G-Sync unless that is also set to work with windowed mode, but then it also causes issues with programs/windows running animations at lower framerates.

I'm gonna try Forza 6 Apex once it's done downloading. I'll see if DX12 is all that it's hyped up to be in at least something else than Ashes of the Singularity, cause I know Nvidia cards run it worse in DX12 than in DX11 somehow.

Every game I play has been in windowed borderless... so i can tab in and out easy Have i been doing it wrong.

That is the best way to tab out quickly, yeah. For some reason for me, almost every game i run borderless will just look like the FPS is much lower than it actually is somehow. I could run certain areas in GTA 5 at 144 FPS and have it look/feel like 40 or something in borderless. It could be because G-Sync is shitting itself or something, not sure.

Had a few quirks and weird things happen, but it's been like 5 hours and everything seems to be alright now.

Shadowplay works (didn't last year on release), windows update doesn't automatically install older GPU drivers and fuck my multi monitor shit up, GTA 5 doesn't lock to 10 FPS or crash every 30 mins, games run fine.

I did have a period where my SSD hit 100% usage for a looong while, but it's fine now.

I just hope windows update doesn't fuck up any drivers or software I already have. It used to do that a lot on my laptop.

No, it's screwed because nvidia fucked up and tried to rush their card to the market before AMD. Now there is a huge stock problem which caused the prices to go up.
Founders edition price only applies to the card that nvidia makes them self.
That MSI card is aftermarket btw.
And msrp is recommended price anyway, apple is the only company that actually follows their msrp price, others just don't give a shit.
US is lucky with the pricing of 1080, here it costs 800 euros, that's 200 more than the "msrp"

This and GP104 overclocking like crap is the reason why I'm waiting for GP102 or Volta

#50210 - reginleaf (06/22/2016) [-]
Do we know why they're overclocking badly? Is it power limited?
User avatar
#50214 - sniffythebird (06/22/2016) [-]
Well, it sort of is. The reference 1080's have very limited power delivery, which isn't a bad thing in itself cause they're so efficient anyway. But it does to some extent limit overclocking, but for the most part it's the silicon lottery, and also just the fact that these chips simply can't handle much more than 2.1Ghz before stopping dead. Which is why on exotic cooling, a good 980 Ti will actually beat a 1080 because GM200 has a much higher IPC than GP104. But again this is on exotic/extreme cooling, there's no way a 980 Ti will win on air. Phase change, ice, or LN2, definitely. Water, maybe.. not entirely sure. But this is why I wanted to get than Titan X with the waterblock instead of a 1070, regardless if I had it on air or got a waterblock later on.

I think it really boils down to the fabrication process, though. Smaller transistors are obviously more efficient, but they don't need / can't handle as much voltage + current before becoming unstable. I mean, older cards like the GTX 280's didn't even go near their limits on air, and you'd limited by temperatures. Today that headroom is smaller, even my 980's barely gained anything from being watercooled (except having lower temps and noise). On top of that, GPU Boost is being pushed further with every generation too, so that's another factor.

Oh well. 2.1 is still insane.

(Not like you can really use the cards for anything but benchmarks with extreme cooling anyway.)

the whole pricing with the 1080's and 1070's is screwed up because of the founders cards. Like i can see the aftermarket cards being 50 dollars more than the MSRP but they said that specific card would be the MSRP.
