yup! Bilbo gave him the Ring and then walked off to Rivendell and Gandalf spent years roaming around doing wizard things and nobody even knew that it was Saurons Ring! If i remember right, Frodo was 33 when he got the Ring and then 50 when the Nazgul came for him and he had to run, so 17 years that he kept the Ring in the Shire and nobody even knew what it was.

Well if you are referring to the movies where Bilbo looks old as fuck on the way to the Grey Havens in the last 10 minutes or so, there was actually 2 years passed between the destruction of the Ring and the Hobbits leaving Middle-Earth. But PRIOR to that because thats not a big difference, Frodo actually owned the Ring for around 20 years in the Shire. Also the books makes no mention of Bilbo being a decrepit old man like the movie shows, it's possible the effects of the Ring just take a long time to wear off, or they just linger for a while.

What do you mean by "Frodo actually owned the ring for 20 years in the Shire"? Did 20 years pass between Bilbo giving him the ring and it's destruction (I have difficulty with understanding the passing of time between events in this series)?

They were weaker races so they wouldn't get any of that anyway. The only person who has carried the Ring with the actual strength to use it was Sauron himself so we don't know what it does exactly, most things are speculation

While you're online, I thought of what might be a plot hole; shouldn't smeagol have died after Bilbo took the ring? Bilbo aged significantly after being separated from the ring for a year, Smeagol was separated from the ring for 50-60 years, and he had already had his life extended unnaturally for centuries. How did he live so long without it?
