The only way to get "attacked" is to scare a snake and have them nip out of self defense - we can be pretty big and intimidating to a little legless critter; to be mistaken for food - we are warm mammals, like the things they eat; or to mess with a particularly temperamental or territorial snake.

When it comes to ball pythons, the last option is pretty rare unless you're trying to get a female's eggs away from her to put them in an incubator. Most are docile and perfectly easy to handle, I would definitely recommend them as a first snake to warm up to.

Think of it this way. It would be kind of dumb to hate all dogs (or all pit bulls, for example) just because of one bad experience - or to become racist because of a bad experience with a person of a different color skin, just for example.

I'm sorry to hear what happened, but unless a "snake attack" is from a huge snake such as a burmese, retic, african rock or anaconda, it's really unlikely to do any damage at all; their teeth are about as thick as a strand of hair and they next to never constrict a person unless they're starving and/or mistake you for food when, especially you're feeding them - always use tongs and ideally, feed pre-killed food; they won't be so 'trained' to expect live creatures to be edible.

You should consider going to a pet store or meeting with a nice breeder who won't mind you visiting just to check out the animals and test your boundaries such as petting and holding the reptiles. Frankly, I'd feel safer handling even a large snake than any average hamster - those are usually much more ornery.

Aw, why is that?
Especially with ball pythons in particular, they make better pets than the average hamster - or chihuahua, for that matter. They call them the "labrador of the snake world" because of that.

It's very rare to find an aggressive one - aside from a mother with eggs; they're very protective and would eagerly sacrifice their own lives to protect their clutch.

Otherwise, even poorly-socialized balls that are neglected and never handled (wait what?) are still generally very manageable and tame down quickly once they get used to people.

I've taken in and fostered a few that were basically acquired as a novelty pet and quickly forgotten about, so they were starving and underweight, dehydrated from their owners forgetting to refill their water bowls, had dead skin plastered all over them irritating their skin from the enclosure being too dry, and they were kept in freezing cold environments so they couldn't even digest their food (which can rot in their bellies and kill them without enough heat). I guess they were just lucky not to have mites or other parasites...

Even though they must have been absolutely miserable, they were complete sweethearts and I fattened them up, got them good and healthy and looked around until I found them good homes.

They're surprisingly low-maintenance pets for anyone who is responsible enough to maintain their enclosures and offer them food regularly; my fish tanks are ten times more complicated and more troublesome to keep up with than any of my little snakes.
