I guess SE and ME are a lot more log in and go, since you can just save and quit at any odd second.

nope. I just occasionally go on funnyjunk or play minecraft on my xbox 360 with my roommate. I'll look into them and see if they might interest me though. I don't spend that much time on the computer except for when I'm working because I spend most of my free time playing soccer, working out, or hanging around the engineering labs.

Nothing wrong with running 5K on your oil. But its important to note the differences between conventional and synthetic oil. Conventional needs to be drained and filled every 5K miles or less. Synthetic oil must be changed at 7K miles or less. Most oil change shops will say 3k for conventional and 5K for synthetic just because they know people will blow off changing it for a few hundred to thousand miles.

10K miles on synthetic probably wont do any harm, but your pushing the limits of the oil's ability to clean your engine. With a newer car 10K is probably just fine. But as the engine ages it will release more particulate into the oil, requiring it to be changed more often.

However, 10K on conventional is slowly killing your engine. It just doesnt last as long. There is a whole argument that conventional is easier on your car, or this and that. But hardly any of it is relevant any more.

Otherwise keep going towards what you enjoy. I'm a diesel technician myself.

At that point, theres nothing a mechanic can do. This person's engine most likely broke down and was taken apart to find out why. -And yeah, good job buddy, you should regularly get your oil changed every 5-10 thousand miles and tires rotated every 3 to 5 thousand. I do both every 5 just because my car is old as fuck. Also, don't forget to have a yearly inspection done!

So....what exactly is it? I can't make heads or tails of the picture
User avatar #161 - mechanicexplain (03/25/2015) [-]
What you see in the picture is what's underneath the cover bolted to the top of the engine. It's the upper end of what's called the cylinder head, and it houses the camshafts and valves which regulate when air/fuel flows into the engine and when exhaust flows out.

All the black crusty shit is called "coke", and it's pretty much the same stuff you find at the bottom of an oil refinery silo; brittle, useless slag. Oil only lasts about 3,000 to 5,000 miles.
User avatar #205 - Dusksamurai (03/26/2015) [-]
That sounds absolutely terrible. Thanks

User avatar #206 - Dusksamurai (03/26/2015) [-]
I didn't even know there was a mechanicexplain XD Thank you for that, the only one I know about is comic. Thanks you two.
#47 - glitchplays (03/24/2015) [-]
The short version is the engine wouldn't run smoothly or let oil flow to the upper parts of the engine and it would grind its arse off and go bang

its a miracle this thing got that many miles.
User avatar #51 - Dusksamurai (03/24/2015) [-]
Thank you
User avatar #44 - cmilanes (03/24/2015) [-]
The engine has been completely annihilated from the buildup of sludge. All that black stuff is essentially dried/overused oil.
