Except he's completely right. Rhino horn is made of keratin and does not contain ivory like elephant horns. I'm surprised funnyjunk messed this one up.

Do they not call it ivory for trading purposes? I thought that was just a category of resource, so to speak. What did they label it as then when traded? Out of curiosity.
User avatar #46 - broswagonist (06/28/2015) [-]
I'm not entirely sure what you mean. Ivory is the name of a material found in the teeth and tusks of animals (not horns, as I previously stated. I actually should have said elephant tusks.)
User avatar #57 - IamSofaKingdom (06/28/2015) [-]
I mean, like...in a trading market, if you brought in elephant tusks you would call them ivory, an ivory shipment right? Would they not just label the rhino horns the same way? a crate of them received would be called ivory? I am not saying that is factually what it is, I was just always under the impression that for the sake of sales they just referred to it the same way. It is illegal so it wouldn't be as likely labelled with its own, more appropriate title (was my thought on it)

Did I explain that any better? Oftentimes if I don't express it clearly the first time I just don't know how to say it.

I've honestly never heard of rhino horns bundled under the same name as ivory, I don't really think it being illegal or not matters much. They're used for very different purposes, too, so selling it under the same name wouldn't make sense.

You are absolutely correct. Elephant tusks are actually elongated, constantly growing teeth while rhino horns are made almost entirely of keratin (the same protein as hair and finger nails). The really fucked up thing is that rhinos can have their horns removed without actually injuring the animals by using tranquilizers and the horns will eventually grow back (this has been a method of preventing poaching for a few decades now). However, because of the extremely high value of the horns, poachers were still killing the animals after they had already had their horns cut, just so they could get the small amount of horn that was left (usually between 7%-10% of the total horn). It is also fucked up that they would kill the animal when they could easily tranquilize it and remove the horn because they are literally killing their own supply off when they do this.
