Definitely try it before you commit. It is not for everyone, and it is the sort of work that you will absolutely hate if it turns out you fall into that category. That being said, it is pretty interesting and can be quite fun at times, but also tedious. Also, unless technological society collapses, you will always be able to find work somewhere.
See if you can find the type of place that trains people in order to hand them off to employers after they finish 3ish classes. Tuition's low-ish, credibility's higher than "I learned it from the interwebs", and your resume skips the stage where it goes into a huge pile. There's one in Chicago, they train people on MySQL and stuff like that.
That's after you decide that programming is right for you.
I would check out places like w3schools, udemy, various youtube tutorials like thenewboston and if you find you enjoy it, find a community college or trade school that offers programming. Universities i would not recommend if you have better options to be certified because you will likely find courses with quality that aren't worth the money you put in (unless have access to government provided college funding through taxes then go nuts)
