yes, it's on a casette tape you can find.

I think it was as tasteful as it possibly could be, and if nobody starts introducing this kind of thin to games, then we're never going to progress to a point where we're taken seriously as media with emotional weight.
If death and romance are the only emotional notes we're allowed to hit (not that death and romance don't have a lot to them, they're just not the full range of human experience) then we're always going to be entertainment to the people who don't already understand how powerful games can be for transmitting emotion from one person's mind to another.

I thought it was far from tasteful, didn't feel like it carried any weight and was designed for nothing more than making the player feel uncomfortable. And honestly, that's the worst type of shock value a game can have.

Look at the last of us, there was attempted rape but Ellie wasn't immediately killed off afterwards to avoid and actual development, she had to overcome what had happened to her and realize there's a fate worse then dying. Also FarCry 3, where Keith IS raped and Jason helps him talk to the rest of the group and assures him that it won't make him weak.

To me, those scenes were better because there was something to actually develop, the fact that they kill off the girl just ruins it.

Fair interpretation. I disagree about the intention of the tapes though. Kojima is a director with a history of deeper stuff going on, so it would seem really out of character for him to simply be trying to shock the player with the rapes.

I saw her death as more of a loss of the ability to deal with the situation. Not only did she die in a really grotesque and creepy way, but there was no resolution for what happened to her, and there was no absolution for what she had done to the mercs.
We shouldn't stop with Paz though, Chico was an unwilling participant, and while you could argue that he was still a participant, how much can you actually blame him for having sex with Paz (which she tells him to do) instead of being tortured and probably killed.

I think it's an unfairly characterized scene, and instead of looking more deeply at it, people tend to just see it as only the campy side of MGS, forgetting that a lot of what makes MGS so good is that close relationship between the absurd and the serious.

Also, the tapes provide an interesting dilemma for canon. The way I saw the tapes, was that we were putting together what Big Boss already knew when he went in to save Paz and Chico.
When you play through the game for the first time, you don't know anything, but the boss does.
Then you get more tapes, and as you collect tapes, you get a more complete picture of the story, but the boss already knew.
And then when you've found everything, and you know everything, the boss knew it all from the beginning, and he still went in to try and save Paz and Chico.

Deep emotional games have a permanent audience. I worry they are losing budget. If big corps like konami bow and kneel for public opinion then we have little hope that a small studio can take the financial hit. Hotline Miami 2 for example. Bioshock infinite breast reduction for a large scale example.

It's an expensive art and that is why I want to save money after getting my doctorate and make games that I want, with people who want the same types of games, for myself, and sell enough to break even, and to please my audience.

I wish you the best of luck making games!

I think we have a few "problematic" problems intersecting on this issue. We have people who think games are just for fun, and we have people who think games can be more, and we have people who think talking about rape is important, and we have people who think talking about rape is triggering and we should stay away from that shit.
#37 - Lunchboxman (03/29/2015) [-]
Paintings depicting rape are widely accepted as ok. A game is even more skillfully and slowly crafted, but I feel that can make it more traumatic.

There should be a resource from a rape survivor site telling rape survivors what games may bring up bad memories, not a change in the industry. Ex: "does the dog die?" blog

Some rape survivors may find it theraputic to see so many people empathise since they experienced rape through proxy. I think it just takes a fucker balsy enough to do it.

Anyways, thanks. I don't plan on making a game about rape. I do plan on making games with realistic gore in non hyper-violence settings, real charater flaws, real non- binary decisions, and the rest will follow suit if those features set the mood for a serious game.
#39 - oplu (03/29/2015) [-]
Sounds legit.
I think something like does the dog die would be the best solution, but I've thought that for a really long time, and I don't think hard core SJWs will be satisfied with some resource they come up with on their own giving them the information, when they could just ban something or make it unprofitable...
