Most important investment is a SSD
Put one into my computer 3 years ago and reduced my boot time by 70%
If you can work with your CPU some longer:
Intel get's Skylake out in Q3 2015 and AMD brings their new generation with new chip design in Q1 2016 which should bring back a lot of competition.
Also, if you live on your own and pay the power bill and your computer runs a few hours a day like mine you may wanna consider buying a Intel CPU. AMD may be cheaper at the purchase but needs a lot more energy (at least in the past generations)
I'm using a Q6600@2.4 Ghz 95W TDP and in idle it needs between 6-8 Watt and with 100% usage (Prime95 large FFTs) I reach 49 Watt at most according to my motherboard.

"If you can work with your CPU some longer"
No can do. While than Phenom 2 might have been decent, even good, 3 years ago when I purchased it, right now it's dragging my entire system down
Also, switching to Intel means buying another MoBo - another price I'm not exactly willing to pay. Yes, I know, my bad for not going for an Intel MB to begin with, but back then the tech savvy dude who advised me for this system (concerning my price/affordable range) advised me to go for an AMD i5 equivalent
Also, power source is not a problem - 700W here.

Doesn't AMD use a new socket by now?
My suggestion was of course considering that you have to replace the mobo anyways. If that's not the case then you should of course stick with AMD for now.
But as I said, the biggest improvement you get for money is a SSD instead of a HDD. Because 3 years isn't that old for a CPU that it would slow down your system. My model's 7 years old after all and doesn't cause problems.

The AM3+ socket is still a thing
And trust me, a weak CPU bottlenecks all other performances like crazy. For instance, for Witcher 2 the GTX 660 is enough for everything but ubersampling, but I can't squeeze better frame rate from the game on high/very high settings because the CPU pulls it back

It almost makes sense except soeone had to think of melting them in the first place when we would've only incidentally seen it before and then impurities and pure metals need to be discovered and then a lot of early metals were actually mixes of weaker metals in order to make something better and I'm just really confused
#17 - boogyshadow (01/25/2015) [-]
Well I was thinking yes, they were weaker metals but over time you learn skills. It's the great thing about being a human is learning from experience. These skills allowed the, then, smiths to make purer and more sturdy alloyed metals. Going back to how they came up with the idea is well, Hunter gatherer really hoards of this mysterious stone together, Fire did everything needed at the time, maybe fire helps this kinda mentality.
