The game has very little plot line. After you start a character scenario, you have free reign on what you do. This game is basically all sidequests. Some quests are easy to figure out and some are more obscure.
You can choose to worship gods, and I personally spend as much money at a certain temple, because you get one affection point for every 200 hundred you spend. Once you get over 200 affection points, a god will cast a spll randomly during battle, and every god I've done this for replenishes hp to a reasonable amount if you're close to death.
There's evil gods as well, and you can sacrifice party members to one called death, and I usually just do that for characters that I bought all the magic for at a certain temple, and if they kinda suck.
The battles aren't random, but the enemies are on screen and if you bump into them you enter a turn based battle.
Also, you can upgrade weapons at a blacksmith to make it rip more shiit, but usually if you push it to it's limits, it becomes less durable.
You gain experience two ways. You can boost strength, agility, constitution etc during battles, but for weapons and schools of magic, you have to spend jewels to get better in them. You earn jewels by doing sidequests, and you usually earn 2 or 3 after late game battles on the first play through. If you played one of the final fantasy legends games, then I would give the romancing saga, or any SaGa game a try.
I guess the experience system is based on Japanese final fantasy 2, but it's not broken to all hell like that game is.
It's also really hard, and the enemies scale levels with you. If you saw my post a few days ago asking people to play romancing SaGa 3 for the snes, almost all the same points can be made for this game, except the translation isn't wonky.
Actually, I would say this game has a great translation. The only reason I think rom hackers have with the series is that most of the text is a graphic, not a line of words like in final fantasy games.

That's what I got from it, but if their is a female bastard around, I don't think she'll play any role at all.
