Based on what I understand, Intel is better than AMD

As for Nvidia vs AMD, Nvidia has more power, while AMD is more cost friendly

I am planning on assembling one PC from 3+ other computers. Do you know if I have to re-install an OS on the hard drive for it to work with the new parts, or if I can just leave it? I looked around and I haven't found a definitive answer. I'll worry about buying new parts after I see how well it works.
User avatar #165 to #164 - savirleo (09/14/2012) [-]
I believe you have to reinstall because the OS gets configured for a certain configuration. Motherboards aren't all the same

To reply to your previous comment, funnyjunk.com/user/blackcomet/130#130.
No, I have a Vista. A hand-me-down that my mother got it's a 2006. It runs well with regular programs, but a gaming computer it is not. I tweeked Minecraft to play on the bare minimum, but it still skips a few frames now and again.

Can you tell me the specs of your computer?
User avatar #134 to #133 - savirleo (09/11/2012) [-]
Looks like you're using up most, if not all, of your RAM with that setup. Have you considered upgrading the RAM?
#135 to #134 - blackcomet (09/11/2012) [-]
It's a laptop. As far as I know I can't upgrade. I've tried dissecting it to find out what hardware it uses but I can't get to anything except for the hard drive and a few fans.

What kind of laptop is it? You should still be able to upgrade it.

#139 to #138 - blackcomet (09/11/2012) [-]
Just a Gateway, if you're asking about the OS then it's a Vista, but all it is a a regular Gateway.

What model? I can't tell what it is by simply telling you the make.
Tell me how to replace the alternator in my dodge.

I have given you all of the information that I know. A "Dodge", Gateway, made in 2006 with all of the specs I have shown would help Find the appropriate "alternator", RAM chips.

Looks like you can't upgrade the RAM. Already maxed out(2GB is the limit for that motherboard)

I was thinking about assembly my own terminal from spare PCs I have. My mother always crapped them out and bought cheap used computers, so I was going to strip them and use what I want to build my own. However I don't know how to find any information on the internal parts of a computer I know nothing about. As for figuring out if the parts are compatible, I would just use Google to find a reference and do as much research as I can.

I do admit I know very little when it comes to computer hardware, and I'm looking for a forum of knowledgeable people to ask if I have any questions.

3 parts to this. Still explains pretty well

You should be able to google the model numbers and it should give you information. The problem comes when it doesn't have it. Had that problem with a video card I got at a flea market. Turns out it was a GeForce

Just watched the first part, very informative. I would prefer a Nividia video card, but I'll take his advice and stick to my price range, or just rob somebody.

Nvidia vs AMD. Not that different from Intel vs AMD. I tend to go with Nvidia as well, but it all comes down to what I can afford(If only I had a job)

I don't think this is worth it

The only reason I would customize my desktop is if it allowed me to hover over a folder and a drop down menu appeared allowing me to see and select all the subfolders. And if I hovered over one of the subfolders I could do the same with their subfolders. All that and I still haven't opened anything.

Either that or if I could customize it to simulate a video games menu. But giving shortcut keys to programs and applications is much easier than setting up a customized desktop. not to mention I'm using an old computer, so the ram isn't that great.

Don't know if they have one that does the folder thing, but they do have an applications management type thing
