the word is not important

even less by the fact that the word which replaces it only broadens what is referred to
User avatar
#205 - beatmasterz (01/23/2016) [-]
Then why take it out?
User avatar
#206 - captainprincess (01/23/2016) [-]
for whatever reason they wanted to

maybe doing this makes it easier to translate to other langauges and be sold internationally
I dont know
User avatar
#207 - beatmasterz (01/23/2016) [-]
Well then that would be a shitty translation because it's not the same book anymore. Connotations yo
User avatar
#208 - captainprincess (01/23/2016) [-]
It is the same book though
tells the same exact story
set in the same exact time period and place
has the same exact characters
the story and time are not wholly dependent on those two words to represent them
if anything that's the far more disrespectful and insulting position

how many languages have any translatable equivalent to "nigger" and "injun" anyway
those are english-unique terms
User avatar
#209 - beatmasterz (01/23/2016) [-]
My language does. Most languages have their version of negro or nigger. English is partially a roman language after all. And no it's not about the story and the set and setting. It's about the interplay of carefully picked words. Great writers are artists with words. And Mark Twain is one of the greatest artists with words. You don't just change that for PC purposes.
User avatar
#210 - captainprincess (01/23/2016) [-]
Frankly the purpose of the change is irrelevant
if it was changed for pc reasons then it's a failure

you dont remove the racism by changing the terms used to be racist with

so even if the intent was to censor, nothing has been censored

and you do twain a disservice by suggesting that his writing is so specific, so precarious, that it is lessened or weakened somehow by a vocabulary change
Im not exactly a big fan of the man's works so Im not going to pretend Im super into the guy and his honour

but if I were him and saw this being said of my works
I'd be insulted, honestly
User avatar
#211 - beatmasterz (01/23/2016) [-]
So you're basically saying a painter is shit if you change some of the colors of his painting and it looks bad? Is that what you mean?

Depending on the context there can be a HUGE difference between nigger and slave, one that might have an impact on the story. You're not into him so you can't make those judgements either way.
User avatar

User avatar
#224 - captainprincess (01/23/2016) [-]
Sure

That I can get behind 100%
eyes open for anything more serious
And ofcourse this alteration should be noted

But it is, as it stands currently, just not important

and certainly not "rewriting history"

christ Im glad actual discussion is still worth it
even if we both thought several times how pointless it is
User avatar
#225 - beatmasterz (01/23/2016) [-]
Herd mentality and polarising on the internet is stupid but it is hella attractive.
User avatar
#222 - captainprincess (01/23/2016) [-]
It isnt
and the insult is in denegrating a story and author you call great to these specifics which were a byproduct of the time

the man wrote that way in all likelihood because that was how writing went down in those days, not because he was thinking of the future and how people would see this and think specific things about it

and the changing of those words does not change anything of substance in the story
the same things are said, and the same meanings are referenced
noone is lied to and deluded that certain things or attitudes were not present in the day or in the story, they are simply given a different vcabulary to present that story

Now don't get me wrong
I know because of FJ's all-in with us or against us mentality I seem pro-censorship

I'm not for this change
I dont think it was a good idea

But Im here to tell you that you people are overreacting and your obsession with 'tee hee naughty words' is an insult to the person you claim to value so much, becuase it shows what you value him for is not the story, not what he wrote, but these words that you love so much, that othes dont like as much as you

If you really actually truly cared about preserving this story
you wouldn't care about alterations so long as the originals were left available

and if his originals have been hunted down and destroyed then you may have something, but even then your position should be "leave the original unaltered work available" instead of "how dare you do this leave my nigger and injun alone how dare you want to read the story without these critical words ohmygod this changes everything waaah"
User avatar
#223 - beatmasterz (01/23/2016) [-]
Fair enough I can agree with that. It's a trivial change of words (I think so, I haven't actually read any Mark Twain lmao), but if this is for PC purposes and more drastical changes are to follow then we definitely need to take a stand to that. And minor changes like these should be made aware of so it's not going unnoticed.
User avatar
#220 - captainprincess (01/23/2016) [-]
No you haven't

I mean you tried, admirably
but 'interplay with carefully picked words' is soft language for "without these words his story means less"

which is a milder insult I grant you, but the same thing
User avatar
#221 - beatmasterz (01/23/2016) [-]
I don't see how it's an insult, it's true. And that's fine because the thing is that he actually did pick the words he picked.
User avatar
#218 - captainprincess (01/23/2016) [-]
it matters because none of you people have been able to defend yours outside of cryng and pretending "LOOK NIGGER AND INJUN ARE WORDS THAT LITERALLY DEFINE THE WHOLE ERA OK WITHOUT THOSE WORDS HIS STORY MEANS NOTHING"

yknow
out of love and respect for the author, obviously
User avatar
#219 - beatmasterz (01/23/2016) [-]
Well I have, and you still haven't countered some of my points.

This discussion is getting pointless. I see where you're getting from and I can see how you could be right in some instances because there definitely are some people on FJ and 4chan that think that way, but frankly you're wrong about this. Changing a piece of art for pointless reasons is bad and bordering to censorship in this case.
User avatar
#216 - captainprincess (01/23/2016) [-]
I dont care about convincing anyone
My whole position is "you people dont care about twain or the history of his story, you only care about 'tee hee he said nigger HEY DONT TAKE MY NIGGER AWAY FUCK YOU' "
User avatar
#217 - beatmasterz (01/23/2016) [-]
What does your position matter if you can't even defend it properly? Sounds like you're just either bad at discussions or just contrarian for its own sake.

User avatar

Actually Im saying if youre that picky about what makes a painting look bad then maybe you dont appreciate it as much as you think

And if youd only be honest about why you're upset "Oh I dont like the way it looks now" instead of "but doing this changes EVERYTHING, the artis and his work are COMPLETELY MISREPRESENTED NOW BAAAAAAAW" you wouldnt look like such a dishonest and selfrighteous philistine

if we're keeping with the art theme

But it's defined as a brand by any other website dictionary.reference.com/browse/rolex and making it plural would mean multiple brands.
