Not really scared of each other, we just don't like strangers. People like to talk to random people and tell them their life fucking story just because they're sitting next to each other, and other people don't like that. Get 2 talkative people and they just get louder and louder trying to talk over each other.

As have I, there's at least 6 of the 500mbps models throughout my house, and it's an awesome solution to the cable dilemma. Previously, I had ethernet cables going as far as out of windows in order to reach their destination, and that was simply a mess.
User avatar #10094 - norwegiandude (06/24/2014) [-]
Sounds like a good solution right there. Yeah that sounds like a mess, haha.
The problem with my internet is that the provider is a motherfucker. The connection is about as stable as a speedabuser on roids and the speed is slower han a snail going backwards in rushtraffic.

If your ISP only offers a certain amount of bandwidth per month, then it's highly likely that, as ThirdJess suggested, you've probably hit your cap and they're throttling you.

Now, if you do not have a bandwidth cap per month, then it really could be a few things:
A) Overheating of the USB stick/ USB port. Port would only be possible on a laptop.
B) Modem/ Router, or even your ISP. Assuming you have a modem/ router. As for the ISP part, it could be something on their end that's causing your area to be pretty bad. Something similar would happen to me with Verizon. Every other month we'd lose internet completely, out of the blue. Then when it started to get really, really bad (talking dial-up-slow internet for 45 seconds, the no internet for an hour, internet for 45 seconds, no internet for an hour, etc.), they blamed it on our Modem and Router. Replaced those at $150~ each. Top of the line stuff. Still horridly slow. Verizon insisted it was on our end and kept hanging up on us. We dropped them like a bad habit and switched to Comcast. Since then, never had any problems.
C) Drivers for Wireless Ethernet. Check the website of the make of the USB by googling the model, download the latest drivers there. If you're on a laptop, it really wouldn't hurt to check for wireless Ethernet drivers provided by your manufacturer.

No matter which way you look at this, it's more than likely a hardware problem over a software problem.
Start by checking the average heat of the USB stick every now and then. And be sure to check how hot it is when it's messing up. It also wouldn't hurt to unplug it for 30 minutes and plug it back in after, to let it cool down.
Then check for any driver updates.
Then rule out it being your Modem/ Router and ISP. Make sure your Modem/ Router aren't overheating for causing the problems.

ISP should be last on the trouble-shooting list. This way you can say you've tried just about everything.

when you say you have "wireless", do you mean a local wireless network to access your wired internet? or do you mean wireless internet as in 3g/4g

I'm gonna assume the former.

So first thing you need to work out is, is it your wireless network that slows down or the internet connection itself? To do this, one method is to run a continual ping do your router (usually .1 on your network, eg 192.168.0.1) and you'd do that by typing "ping 192.168.0.1 -t" into a cmd window and watch for dropped packets or unusually high latency. At the same time run a ping to google.com by typing in "ping google.com -t" into another CMD. If you notice large fluctuations at the same time then it's your wireless network. If only google has high pings or dropped packets then it's your internet connection.

Now since it's probably going to be just the wireless connection causing the problem there are a few ways to improve reception..

1) Attach a high gain antenna (to wireless router and/or computer's wifi card)
2) Antenna placement is key
3) use something like wifi analyser to find where the best signal is and place antennas appropriately play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer&hl=en
4) if you've got a laptop, you can try even making a heatmap of your house and it's wifi reception then work out the best placements www.ekahau.com/wifidesign/ekahau-heatmapper

Now the solution kober suggested using EoP (Ethernet over power) is subject to the same limitations as wifi, it's half duplex and is susceptible to interference on the power circuit, but they do work. However if you use them, i'd recommend using no more than 2 as a point to point solution. Although you can hypothetically connect 64 or so of those adapters, you will likely experience dropouts more frequently than wifi if you use more than 2

Okay I'll try. Could it be though that my usb might be overheating? It's pretty warm and when I plug it out for a minute the internet improves.

I personally do not recommend wireless internet connectivity to anybody who cares at all about having consistent internet.
Of course, this could do with your ISP having maintenance or other issues, as-well.

I know, I'd much rather have wired but my mom (haha make jokes) won't let me put cables across the house.
