Don't watch the anime, it's poor quality. Too much filler in episodes (There used to be a ratio of 1:2 for how many chapters an episode covers, now it's like 1:1/2), fluctuating animation quality, etc.
The anime used to be good, but around the Punk Hazard arc is started to take a noticeable dip. You're better off doing what I do, read the manga, and whenever there's a cool scene, wait a few weeks for the anime to catch up and animate that scene and watch it.

hi , before i got to watch one piece i was like 600 episodes is alot , but i started it is legendary first 100 episodes were good after episode 250 u will start drooling it becomes too awesome , i highly recommend it the storyline is very massive and there arent any holes in it and never gets broing and awesome thats why its long , u should watch it ,
#155 - anon (05/10/2015) [-]
Nope i'd recommend Fairy tail, Full Metal Alchemist or Bleach cause One Piece is just some boring pirate stuff that goes for little kids so if you are under 10yo it'll go probably if not lower like 5yo

cause too easy and dumb jokes that only preschoolers laugh at like the pickaboo when adult keeps hand in front of his/hers face and takes them off and says pickaboo and kids just love it.
User avatar #153 - Sethorein (05/10/2015) [-]
never watch shounen anime. Watch seasonal stuff, 12 -36 episode stuff. Get used to what you like. Then pick one among the many 5000000000 episode shounens to commit to. Starting with a shounen will just tire you out before you even experience most of what anime can give you in terms of variety.

One piece is one of the better shounens. Deffo better than Bleach, probably better than naruto, about as good as Fairy Tale in my opinion.
#161 - anon (05/10/2015) [-]
I guess it is kinda true, personally the reason i could get through all the long shounen stuff is because i read it in manga form(Manga goes waay faster to get through than anime)
User avatar #162 - Sethorein (05/10/2015) [-]
I read manga most of the time too. I just don't like the shounen genre. I feel like production value is shit on when # of episodes grows. A clean 24 episode anime is my ideal.

General consensus: Watch through episode 44, if it hasn't clicked yet, it probably never will.

If it was almost there, but you just weren't QUITE invested, episode 130 is the absolute point of no return. If you aren't that into it by that point, you can very safely stop.
User avatar #154 - Sethorein (05/10/2015) [-]
>just give it a 44 episode trial run

Nigga, that's four animes!
User avatar #176 - hanabro (05/10/2015) [-]
You shouldn't start on an anime that's 800 episodes without expecting to make an investment. You could power through that trial run in a weekend.

Just from me alone: Not too much of an anime fan but its the 3rd anime I've seen and its my fav.

The story is a bit slow at first admittedly but understanding the whole story from start to finish makes some moments later on more gripping. like there are some moments of pure seriousness and you can under stand why when you see it from the start. Yes it has lots of well placed comedy but also sad moments that are heart breaking

Not to mention all the characters have a back story and unique personality's so you'll find at least one of them to be your fav

TL;DR I watched one peace and regret nothing, its awesome
User avatar #113 - sketchE (05/10/2015) [-]
id start with something smaller then transition up. i havent seen it but its just so daunting for me and i wouldnt want someone to get scared off by it. my personal recomendation is anything by square enix/bones. soul eater FMA things like that
#111 - restfullwicked (05/10/2015) [-]
personally i love it but it doesnt really get amazing till episode 30 ish. they do need to introduce a lot of concepts quite fast though so perhaps that was the issue.

If you actually want to get into it id skip to the Baratie arc then Arlong park that follows. for me thats when it started to get really good. and they do enough recaps later on that you dont miss much, plus you can always go back if you actually like it.
User avatar #126 - hanabro (05/10/2015) [-]
This guy is wrong, don't skip the non-filler arcs. EVER.
#128 - restfullwicked (05/10/2015) [-]
blah blah blah. missed the point of what i said entirely. he wanted to know if it was worth watching and i told him what episodes to watch if he wanted to give it a fair test. i also ended by saying that he should also go back and watch them if he enjoyed it.

i would also say that some filler is actually alright, and some actual episodes are boring as shit.
if he watches it from episode one. he needs to deal with alvida, buggy, captain kuro, and some other really boring episodes all to get to episode 30 and loose interest before it gets really good.
ID rather have another onepeice fan to talk to about a show i like than another person going "i got to episode 4 and nothing happened i cant be arsed with this"
User avatar #139 - smaaen (05/10/2015) [-]
And after I posted I see that you recommended him not skipping neither Baratie nor Arlong park. Whelp. I blame the anon.
User avatar #138 - smaaen (05/10/2015) [-]
I don't really jump into conversations other people have, usually.

I can see your point about the first people being annoying - but in those "mini arcs" there's a lot of important character development and introduction to how the different ones are and act. Especially so for Luffy and Zoro, and later Sanji and Nami. I personally never enjoyed Usopp, he got a little better after the time skip, but not by much - But if he skips Baratie, for example, he will miss out on Luffy's conviction for the first real time as well as losing out Zoro's first "bout" against Dracule Mihawk.

There's just a lot of important parts inbetween those "annoying parts", and honestly, the show has "annoying parts" all through-out with a few exception (different strokes for different folks and all that). If he gives up at episode 10, he won't make it past ep 150 even if he skips directly to Logue Town.
#140 - restfullwicked (05/10/2015) [-]
there are but again point has been missed.
I actually agree that zolo has some good character stuff. his backstory is heartbreaking along with nami and to an extent sanji (though personally the manga version is metal as fuck)
but its all for naught if he doesnt like it because of the filler or mini arcs. if he gets to see off the bat some of the best the series has to offer its a good chance. best food forward and all that. Arlong park in many ways is the first "real" set of episodes. with each crew member going their own way to fight one of the commanders, before now luffy did most of the work.

I will revise my statement however because good points have been made. id get the first four issues of the manga, that covers most of the stuff i said to skip for the sake of time. and should be fairly cheap.
then go see how much of a boss zeff is.
User avatar #141 - smaaen (05/10/2015) [-]
Yeah sorry. I don't know what happened, I read it wrong, or read it hastily - saw the anon and saw another guy saying something similar. I've also spent 3 hours writing about terrorism and international terrorism and poverty in the world and the reasons for war.

I think it's time to take a break ;p

aye sounds fair. have one for me too.

Dont be a stranger, stranger.
#134 - anon (05/10/2015) [-]
"If you actually want to get into it" - yeah, just skip the entire reason why Nami joins and how Sanji joins. Also skip Zoro's first meeting with Mihawk.

Totally not important later on, not at all. You'd rather have a "fan" of the show to talk to, but you want said "fan" to skip important plot and character developments. Also, those two arcs are brilliant.
#136 - restfullwicked (05/10/2015) [-]
nami truly joins the crew in arlong park and sanji joins in Baratie both of them are sagas i suggested, it also includes the first meeting with miahawk. so i dont really know what your point was because i suggested watching all those things
User avatar #131 - hanabro (05/10/2015) [-]
Hey, fair enough. My train of thought is that somebody who's going to quit after 4 episodes isn't someone who would start an 800 episode anime in the first place, but OK. Plus, part of the charm of the series is in the little details. Skipping anything robs you of that. I'm just never one to RECOMMEND skipping episodes. It's stupid to me. Almost as stupid as being a dick to somebody over them disagreeing with you.
#135 - restfullwicked (05/10/2015) [-]
being a dick about someone saying im wrong for expressing an opinion on something is not the same as being a dick for someone thinking differently.

and i agree. i like how buggy comes back into things. i really like after ever arc all the people that they have met see the newspapers and all the shit they get up to. doesnt change that fact that the first 20 episodes can be boring as shit.
#105 - MDrDeathC (05/10/2015) [-]
Man, some faggot One Piece fanboys are thumbing down these rational opinions.

My recommendations:

Cool stuff:
Trigun Cowboy Bebop GTO Code Geass Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood Samurai Champloo
Gurren Lagan
Kill La Kill (Better after watching a lot of other anime to understand what they're lampshading etc)
Gatchaman Crowds
Death Note
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Ghost in the Shell (Very prolific, been around since the dawn of anime it feels like and was my introduction to anime)
Golden Boy
Black Lagoon
Tatami Galaxy
Cencoroll
Katanagatari
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade
Sword of the Stranger
Anything from Studio Ghibli
Neon Genesis Evangelion (Whether to watch the original or the remake is a matter of fervent debate. They were made at different times and it FEELS like it.)

Cute:
K-On!
Lucky Star
Ika Musume
Ouran High School Host Club
Watamote
Love Hina (The anime of the first manga I ever read, don't remember much about it since I watched it when I was a preteen)
Little Witch Academia
Literally ANYTHING from Studio Ghibli (fucking God, seriously, if you only have time fr one choose Ghibli)
Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun
Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo

The only ones you should watch dubbed are:
Samurai Champloo
Trigun
Cowboy Bebop
FMA: Brotherhood
Death Note

Literally all of those I would recommend over One Piece a thousand times over.

From my experience some of my friends didn't really like it at the beginning cause it wasn't what they expected and around episode 30 they got hooked and basically started binge watching it. Let me know what you decide to do or if you liked the show.
User avatar #95 - hereforfun (05/10/2015) [-]
I caught up with the anime recently after almost a year of watching. I think its great. The beginning is slow as all the characters become introduced but what really hooks people in is the arc around episode 30 (Its a good one). One Piece is a beautiful ride. You have to the episodes as they come. I suggest giving it a try if by episode 35 you still dont like it then maybe it isnt for you.
#93 - ninpir (05/10/2015) [-]
I am a fan but here is my honest opinion. I say try it out. If the style and episodes don't hook you within about 5-10 episodes in i say no. It honestly does get better with age due to comedy style changes, animation gets better, and character quirks/jokes but that does take a while to develop. To me its the show I watch when i just want to have a good time with some of the best action scenes in anime but again that takes a while.
