a variable, unless otherwise limited, can be any number, real or imaginary, from infinity to negative infinity.

Infinity can be considered as an extension to the real numbers or the complex plane. It is not itself a real or complex number. The complex plane together with this point is topologically equivalent to S2 (the unit sphere embedded in R3) and is thus referred to as the Riemann sphere. Your variable could be allowed to equal this point if you specified it to be part of your set. The problem with attempting to add a real number to infinity is that it infinity is not a complex number and does not have the same group structure.
