Are you fucking retarded? So the city that's 5 times bigger has smaller travel distances? Is that what you're >implying?
#135 - admiralaverage (09/16/2014) [-]
"Are you fucking retarded?" was used far too liberally.
As cities get bigger so does the demand for services, so the density of houses and services within both cities are probably pretty similar.
Size of a city is irrelevant information if you're working within that city, one person in Dallas could work somewhere 2 miles from their home.
and someone in amsterdam could work somewhere 20 miles from their home.
atheistzilla makes a completely legitimate point.
I live in a town and work in the next town, whats to stop me from working 200m from my home and not 15 miles.
#138 - wimwam (09/16/2014) [-]
It might seem like irrelevant information, but unless you can point out a study that compares commuting distance between the two, city size is the best measure.
#141 - admiralaverage (09/16/2014) [-]
my point's still the same, everyone is going to take the job that has the shortest commute if everything else about 2 jobs are the same.
And if you've got a huge commute people are likely to move closer to their work.
City size is an incredibly rough measure of commuting time.

The belgium war for independence quite literally started with a couple of dozen of people starting a riot after seeing an Italian opera. I don't really call the nation that was founded after a riot because of an Italian opera the good guys.

I'm sorry, but imagine what could have happened with The United Kingdom of the Netherlands, we could become a dominant player once again if we participated in the scramble for Africa or try to take more Asia, we could have become a global power once again that won't be crushed by the Germans, maybe defeated on our own but not that hard and France would always be happy to fight the Germans together with Great Britain so we would still be winning on the end.
User avatar #134 - stefanovic (09/16/2014) [-]
Well in the end the revolution might have been kinda pointless:

The Belgians were angry at the Dutch king because he didn't speak French.
Nowadays (some of) the Flemish were angry at our (former) prime minister because he didn't speak Dutch.

A United Kingdom of the Netherlands would sure have been something nice to see.

See I have a buddy that rides a bike everywhere so I can kind of see where you're coming from, but he only goes to school and that depends on schedule. My daily routine is to drive 10 miles to school in the morning, get done with school, change in my car to my work uniform, and make it to my work which is 8 miles from my school in about half an hour. If I rode a bike, that would be impossible

Yeah and many cyclist in Holland think they're god and have to ran out of the way for them. Just a few days ago I say a guy crashing into a tourist (who had no idea whats going on) because he refused to take his brakes. Then he insulted her because it was clearly his fault for not giving a shit that someone is in his way.
User avatar #131 - freakyorange (09/16/2014) [-]
"i live in Holland....."

This is why you can't think of any reason why..y'know..the fact that perhaps there are other cultures out there that don't ride bikes as much.
User avatar #159 - atheistzilla (09/17/2014) [-]

Because the rest of the world has hills.
Thus people would need to climb hills.
Thus not many people use a bike outside of holland.
This leads to making it obsolete technology.
Which leads to people not giving them enough thought while planning roads and road-systems.
Which leads to clashs.

Also: If everyone is a cyclists, nobody can go and rant about cyclists. Additionally: If you see thousands of people use a bike on a daily basis you won't notice the bad guys will diminish in the crowd.
The fact, that there are less people using a bike makes them a minority. You know what happens to minorities.

Because our country is about as big as your continent and many people use cars to go rom point A to Point B, because fuck we all live so fucking far from each other, then we get conditioned to watch for cars which are huge compared to a little human on a bike.

The fuck dooes country size have to do with it? Nobody is talking about inter-city travel here. Just getting from home to work or the shop or something. I mean when I used to work in another city I`d just take the train like a sane person, but I`d still go to the station with my bike.
