in that case, maybe there's a missing semi-colon or brace before the first declaration?

Just realised, the line before it had other variables commented out, but the type wasn't inside the comment -> the error was basically saying that there was a double double.

maybe you need to split it up into two statements?

double arr1[ i ][ j ];
double arr2[ i ][ j ];

splitting it up gives same error but this time it is:

double arr1[ i ][ j ]
^

and it doesn't pick the second line as an error, I think I might have to use another type or use a typedef for a custom type, but not sure.
