i heard that indy or novice developers could use it to get started programming, also it can be used as an entertainment center sort of thing. by optical do you mean optic audio out? because i beleive it has an HDMI output.

Yepp my point exactly.

Raspberry pi foundation was created to make people interested in programming.
True that it has HDMI but why would you want to output picture and audio to the same source, wich good home cinema uses the tv speakers;P

The hardwareacceleration is only compatible with h264 also

it doesnt have a good audio processer anyway, but you could use a divider or a switch box.

In the end an hdmi audio switcher cost more than the RP ;(
