Well, this isn't to imply that multiple revelations are required to change someone. Not to imply that all people are the same, but usually it takes just one significant, life changing moment to impact someone in such an astounding and meaningful way, to permanently alter their outlook on life. Repeated instances of significant events, I agree, would make an individual callous to the experience. Which, in this parent's case, is a bad choice. If the child did not change after the first "incident", what makes them think that another orchestrated "incident" would have a different effect? In this sense then, the repeated manipulation of events, when callousness has already been demonstrated, gives justification for loathing or apathy.
It is up to the individual to assess each situation separately and with wisdom. In this case, I believe the mother was wise, considering the results.

You don't manipulate the emotions of a child you fucking freak.
You teach them rationally.
