generally you go to school for 13 years, kindergarten-6th is elementary, 7-8 is middle, 9-12 is highschool.
the only grade that's not 'mandatory' is kindergarten, however if you enter into school for the first time in elementary you're given a test to determine your basic abilities, then they take into account your age, and your parents wishes and they place you anywhere within 1st-9th grade.

They never 'place' you higher in highschool than 9th grade though because graduation in highschool is based on a credit system, the difficulty of your classes is based on your course choice, and the grading system at the highschool level is essentially just used to give rough estimates of when you're supposed to graduate.

I left school for a year one time in elementary school to do homeschool and came back in, the placement test was about 500 multiple choice questions long, they gave you two hours to complete as much as you could, and the questions progressively got harder and harder ranging from simple addition in the beginning to college level calculus at the end. Every question you got wrong counted against you so if you didn't know the answer you were encouraged not to fill anything in.

On a side note, if I were a genie and somebody wished for more wishes or tried to get all clever with the word play I would kill them dead since I always figured genies granted wishes more out of gratitude for setting them free than because they fill some sort of divine cosmic wish granting purpose. From what I understand they're just super powerful beings that are sort of whimsical and arrogant, feels like if you were to try and abuse their favors in some way they'd just make you go fuck yourself.

I wonder who the hell came up with the genies as indentured servants to whoever gives them a hand thing.

oh no she came straight out and told me she hated me freshman year, when I asked her why she said she didn't need a reason, the only reason I think that was the event that made her hate me is because I don't really remember her knowing who I was before that and I noticed she'd get really pissy when people weren't giving her the proper attention. (Junior year I accidentally forgot her name on the first day of school and it pissed her off so much I made a running gag of just never remembering it and calling him something different every time)

I also came from a small town community and my family already had a sort of bad reputation and she started spreading shit rumors about me. She'd say I was into drugs and shit so a couple of my childhood friends parent's refused to let them hang out with me anymore, and she'd say I was basically a terrible person to the girls so most of the girls in school didn't want anything to do with me.
Also, she started 'dating' one of my best friends on the side who was this fat nerdy kid and she convinced him to leave me 12 miles out of town in the middle of woods and take off and our friendship never really recovered, she tossed him to the side when he ran out of money to take her on 'dates' which was basically him buying her and her friends a bunch of meals

By no means did I score a victory on this girl, she treated me like shit for years and suffered no real repercussions for it.
the entire situation was pretty much 100% awful for the duration of my knowing her.

Although I see your point, this comic specifically seems to be pointing out the fact that a large population of our country are literally immigrants. We have people from almost every country in the world living here, and while those born here outnumber the immigrants we probably have the widest variety of immigrants living in America, hence the multitude of smaller balls not just a few small balls and a big English ball, and percentage wise we're probably more immigrant than other countries.

America is meant to be the melting pot of the world, so any time someone says, "America is full of immigrants" They're not insulting us, quite the contrary, their stating that our country is so great that people from all over the world go to great trouble to get here. That's why I believe America is the best country, because even though other countries have the best education or healthcare, people from other countries who get to choose a different country to live in more often than not choose here. Which speaks louder than any statistic.
User avatar #93 - AnomynousUser (03/03/2015) [-]
Actually, during urbanization and the industrial revolution up to the early 1900's, there were tons of immigrants. Like much higher amounts than today...
Whenever something happens that makes us need cheap labor (like the industrial revolution or agricultural needs of war), immigration skyrockets. And while the past decade has not had that many immigrants, we still have had tons, especially after the first immigrants were considered native.
User avatar #95 - AnomynousUser (03/03/2015) [-]
Don't get me wrong; we are an independent nation and all that. It's just whenever people talk about immigrants, they only bring up the founding ones and Mexicans of today. Immigration has been an important part of US history throughout all of it.
User avatar #70 - awesomanium (03/03/2015) [-]
Well, compared to other countries, which have had civilisations for up to 10 times as long as the U.S. (Egypt, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Britain, just to name a few), you're still super young
The 'immigrant' thing is most apt in the way that you didn't develop your own culture like other, older civilisations, but you adopted others, and the relatively short timespan you've had to evolve these adopted cultures into your own means that it's very clear to see the influences

#51 - amuzen (03/03/2015) [-]

User avatar #57 - pseudobro (03/03/2015) [-]
Most of the oldest 'places' and, eventually, countries, were founded by people who had been living there for generations. Ownership of property is a relatively new development, and nation states are still more recent.
#59 - amuzen (03/03/2015) [-]
nationality is defined by leadership and community that blossoms under said leadership, if you're from hawaii you're from a signifcantly different region of land than alaska but as far as I'm concered a russian is still more foriegn.
User avatar #60 - pseudobro (03/03/2015) [-]
I don't know why you're telling me this. My point is that not every place was settled by immigrants, and most of the oldest places were first settled (claimed, if you like) by the locals.
#47 - anonymous (03/03/2015) [-]
Your not counting the influx of immigrants we've had after we had "settled". Polish, German, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Cuban, etc. We are a nation of immigrants, look in any American history textbook. We have the term "boiling pot" for a reason.

nothing, I'm just thinking about it rationally, just because a country was founded and built up by various peoples from different nationalities doesn't mean that it should have to forever throw open it's doors for everyone in all the world to come and go as they please.

Some(not me) would say It hasn't gone long enough.
Most people who are from just about any other continent/country except America (or Australia or New Zealand ) may have had ancestors there thousands upon thousands of years back.
300 years might sounds a lot but to a country and it's people then the number isn't that great. That's why people say that America is made out of immigrants. But wait, maybe, 500 more years and people will stop.

Except that isn't what happened at all. Nobody went to another continent with the sole intention of killing people. You also make it sounds like the Indians were somehow innocent in all this, as if to say that they didn't commit their own atrocities.

Furthermore you forget that the Indians were no more native than those who came later, seeing as they too came from elsewhere. Where do you draw the line in the sand and say that X amount of time is when someone becomes native to the land? Why is that X value you decide hold any more merit than another random time, call this Y? Why does Y have any validity? And so forth.

Not to mention the fact that Indians nowadays have a funny way of showing how they are victims, since most of the relatively "pure" ones now reside in shitty trailer parks rampant with alcoholism and gambling addiction and live entirely off their monthly government checks. All of this being done away from the general public eye of course. Like, I cannot begin to explain how much of a shithole any of those reservations are, they are absolutely pathetic.
#20 - newall (03/03/2015) [-]

I have a similar story, though it contains less personal embarressment, and more other peoples embarressment, the best kind. A girl in my class was sitting next to a guy i assume she thought was really hot, and she started balancing her chair on the back legs, and then, with great drama, yelled out "im falling" while slowly tipping backwards. Despite being good looking, he was not a very well coordinated feller, and it ended up in her grabbing onto his shirt, pulling him with her and both of them falling backwards in their chairs. She was fine, but he had to sew some stitches in the hospital. Apparently her parents made her write an apology letter, and he actually posted a picture of it on facebook.
