I'm not gonna hop on the bandwagon of "draksuls is soooo hard hurdur" because it's really not. I know you eventually get to the point where it's pretty easy and you can kill just about anything. But it's defiantly not casual. It's still got a really steep learning curve and takes alot of time to get good at. It's not something you just pick up and play for 25 minutes and are godlike at. You gotta devote a good amount of time to it, not something a "casual" player would usually do.

Might be easy later, but the fact that you gotta learn the game and that you know you could fail if you're not alert makes it interesting.

I have analyzed my thoughts on what makes a game for me and it seems to be that you have to really get into it to progress in it. A lot of games out there really require you to learn nothing about how the game works for you to progress in it and I seem to hate that. For example the game I got most into recently was Darkest Dungeon and it fits into that criteria.

Only exception I can think of is pokemon and it mainly satisfies my need to grind for sort of "status symbols" - rare and perfect pokemon (breeding doesn't cut it anymore either due to it being too easy). I know somewhere deep in my head that it's really silly but pokemon is the only game I can see maintaining it's "grind value" throughout the years due to the fact that you can always transport your things to the next gen.

Monster hunters harder at first if you don't know what your doing, from what I've watched the game play is similar to monster hunter, dark souls is just a darker monster hunter without loading zones for every area and deeper lore. That's not bad mind you, I love monster hunter and no doubt if I cared to play dark souls I'd enjoy it.

On my first play through it took me 40 hours to kill the lost sinner, old iron king, and rotten, I did waste about 7 of those hours with co op and stuff. At my current stage, I can get though all that and freja in under 18 hours, clearing all areas, and barely trying. Even with like, joke builds. So yeah.

Obviously talking bout 2 because it was relevant, in the first Dark Souls I had no damn idea where to go half the time, it took me like 90+ hours playing without a guide

"A whole nother" is a phrase that makes no sense, as "nother" isn't a word.

For realsies though, he's probably on mobile and got auto-corrected or something.

only reason i bring it up is because i used to do that all the time. and yeah, but it was spelled correctly/

meh, its hard just because dumasses keep falling for all the traps, the games where pretty easy, the only challenge were the bosses, and they werent like insanely difficult or impossible, they were wll structured, you just had to follow the pattern, the most difficult was the first one, because they controllers were kinda crappy and unpolished, in the new ones they still feel unpolished but they have improved.

I didn't enjoy the fight mechanics of one. It wasn't like a difficult hard.. it was a "these mechanics kinda suck" hard. I also played years after it was released, so I was looking through present eyes at a past game.
#75 - notnotnot (02/17/2016) [-]
"these mechanics suck" As someone who has loved the souls series since day one and has poured countless hours into the game due to the mechanics, what did you not like about it? Honestly curious

#174 - thegoblingamer (02/17/2016) [-]
>>#90 said it ery well.

I was a huge fan of the series though. The lore was absolutely fantastic and heartbreaking, so it's not like I hated the game. People just like to hop on the "CASUL NOT DARK SOULS FAN GIT GUD" train cause no one is original anymore.

Fighting was a tad clunky. I get that you're supposed to be an amateur, so I'm not saying that's what was wrong with it. It wasn't super responsive (again, I played the first one. I was also a 'guide' for my friend while he played 1 and 2, so I know the boss mechanics and was basically back-seat playing. Telling him where to go and whatnot. It was enjoyable, honestly.)
One of the things that really bothered me was, since I'm a dodgy player, was that the enemy was basically like you. They were amateurs that swung their weapons like fuckwits in most cases. My problem with that and being dodgy was that I'd roll out of the way and they'd, mid-fucking-swing, do a 180 to hit me. It was bullshit. They were in the middle of a swing and they'd be able to rotate on a dime to hit me during their swing. That's not "difficult", that was just a stupid mechanic.

But yea, 90 anon said a lot of good shit. The game definitely deserves love, but people should be able to criticize a game without everyone jumping at them. Especially since I'm actually a fan of the game and am gonna play 3 as soon as it's released.

I'm not the OP, but I felt that movement was clunky and imprecise, sometimes a bit drifty or, worse, stopped short.

I felt that it had the sort of Trial-and-Error difficulty of 80's platformers like Ghouls and Ghosts. (Turn a blind corner with your shield up because you KNOW something will be there, and then get attacked from behind or above or from both sides.)

Aside from the PVP having a certain element of "equal footing-ish" where a good portion of difficulty was found in the opponent's skill, most of the situations are difficult because the enemy is a massive damage sponge that deals a ton of damage. Of course that's hard. That's not really an enjoyable kind of hard, though. It's just stacking the odds against me. Which gives some people a hard on, sure, but I'm not personally a huge fan of that brand of "difficulty enhancement." I find it lazy. It makes me actually not rage, because I go into a fight knowing the odds are stacked against me, and I need to have more skill than the boss has OP stats to win, and since the AI isn't very bright that's not hard to accomplish.

Fighting games piss me off because I just plain suck at them and playing against CPU reminds me of that fact. The odds aren't stacked against me, I just suck. That's the difference as I perceive it, but your mileage may vary.

But hey, I still liked the game. I just didn't think the difficulty was anything groundbreaking. It's hard in exactly the same way cruel mario maker levels are hard. That's not to say unfun, but not exactly groundbreaking or worth jizzing on the disc about.

User avatar
#54 - noseses (02/17/2016) [-]
Well Hell it's not even that. I liked the more fluid, fast-paced combat of bloodborne because I'm a fan, and the only thing I felt could make it better was to not feel like you're fighting inside a pool of syrup,
User avatar
#175 - thegoblingamer (02/17/2016) [-]
I remember watching a video explaining the reason why.
In bloodbourne, you're a hunter bruh. So you're trained in combat to be expert-level.
In DS, you're just some fucking undead shmuck, so you suck dick at combat.
User avatar
#179 - noseses (02/18/2016) [-]
I mean, yeah, that makes sense, but I dark souls never feels like I'm improving as a player and a character. Its just slapping beefier weapons and armor on the same shambling mass. Bloodborne feels like I and the character grow as I remaster the controls. I dunno, both are great as long as they aren't 2.
User avatar
#178 - Helel (02/18/2016) [-]
That actually makes alot of sense.
I was always a fan of the faster paced "your character is on expert-level" From Software games
I.e. Armored Core and Bloodborne

Outside of the boss battles, which can be somewhat difficult, the dark souls games are actually somewhat easy. What makes it hard for new players isn't actual difficulty. It's that the game basically blindsides you.

#188 - shamblerdk (02/22/2016) [-]
With the absolutely terrible UI you mean? I hope that DS3 will have a completely different UI, that actually makes sense on a PC. Or, at least some modability so we'll see a meaningful transformation like Skyrim with SkyUI.

I've always referred to DS as containing unnecessary amounts of moon logic. Specifically citing that part in DS1 where you need to curl up in a ball inside a bird's nest to get carried back to the tutorial zone to kill the first boss again for better shit.
#148 - muffinssnuffims (02/17/2016) [-]
Funnily enough, I almost never had to fight a single boss in dark souls more than twice, but fuck me in the ass if I didn't have the hardest time and spend hours upon hours upon hours trying to get through the areas to get to the bosses.

I found the bosses (relatively) easy, but the regular enemies hard as balls. To each their own I guess.
#134 - grammarofficer (02/17/2016) [-]
(and all the bastards who can invade you anytime in endgame gear)

Seriously, though, it is not as nightmarishly hard as people make it out to be, but it is still leagues more difficult than your average rpg/action game.
User avatar
#103 - angelious (02/17/2016) [-]
its different approach to gaming.

dark souls hinges a lot more on players attention to details. every trap, mob and such can be beaten if the player is invested into the game enviroment enough (its a design choice)

for instance, i bought dark souls during the huge "dark souls is so hard" hype, and i basically went through the game with shield up and walking everywhere. and i didnt really get stuck or even die until i hit the first boss. A Tale of Two Adventurers and artificial difficulty
User avatar
#189 - nebuelaeus (02/23/2016) [-]
But that's what i was trying to say. It is not a diffucult game, it just throws cheap shots at you. In that video the guy talks about watching for environmental hints about things that may happen, but to a new player (in most cases at least) those aren't going to mean anything. Blood on the floor would be an aesthetic feature in most games so to someone who goes into dark souls thinking that it is actually very difficult that won't matter. They are going to be expecting every fight to require extreme skill, not that the game will insta kill you if you walk around this corner too fast to notice a small hole. What makes those features stand out is experience in the genre, which basically equates to trial and error.

It's not difficult in a traditional sense, which is what i was trying to get across. as an example. say i told you to walk down a hallway but if at anytime you walk more than 3 miles an hour i will kill you. would you consider that to be a difficult task? most likely not. just high risk high reward. forcing someone to go slow and pay attention does not equate to difficulty. (at least not in my opinion)
User avatar
#190 - angelious (02/23/2016) [-]
indeed, which is why most people find it hard. which is also why dark souls became such a huge hit with gamers because the enviroment ACTUALLY MEANT SOMETHING. its not a cheap shot, its a clear game design that is fair towards the player while still being challenging AND rewarding.

i knew dark souls cred.i went in already invested. that is why i died only once in the tutorial, and then zero times until i hit the black knight, then i died to it once and decided to skip it, again surviving until the gargoyles, which again took two tries with me.

the game punishes you for not paying attention, while rewarding you for paying attention. this is not trial and error, as for your example: if there were clear hints that going above certain speed would kill me, then it would be MY fault that i died, not yours.

dark souls is challenging and rewards thought while punishing people who do not use their head while gaming. i dont call it hard since i believe calling something hard is stupid, and games that are solely done for the sake of being hard are usually shitty (case in point: dark souls 2.)
